Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced ICU RN for a 13-week acute care travel assignment requiring at least 2 years of critical care experience and current ACLS and BLS certifications.

Details

  • 18-bed ICU within an acute care hospital setting
  • Critically ill patients with complex needs including Sepsis, Acute MI, renal failure, post-vascular procedures, strokes/TIA, seizures, ARDS, and CV procedures requiring invasive and non-invasive hemodynamic monitoring
  • Patient population includes adolescent, adult, and geriatric age groups
  • Nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:2, with occasional 1:3 (third patient may be overflow or PCU downgrade)
  • RNs are required to titrate critical drips including vasopressors and sedation (e.g., Levophed, Cardizem, Amiodarone, Heparin, Insulin)
  • Equipment includes BiPAP, CPAP, mechanical ventilation via trach and ET tube, telemetry, IV pumps, sequential compression devices, and specialty beds
  • RNs read telemetry strips; no monitor tech on unit
  • Charting via Epic EMR
  • 12-hour day shifts (6:45 AM – 7:15 PM); night shift availability also exists (6:45 PM – 7:15 AM)
  • Every other weekend required (Friday–Saturday or Saturday–Monday rotation)
  • Rotational holiday coverage with core staff
  • No on-call or standby requirement
  • Floating required to Stepdown, and occasionally to Med-Surg/Telemetry or to care for boarded ICU/Stepdown patients in the ED; travelers float in rotation and are not always first to float
  • 13-week contract

Requirements

  • Active WV RN license or compact RN license required
  • Current AHA BLS and AHA ACLS certifications required
  • TNCC certification required (effective 10/21/2026)
  • Minimum 2 years of critical care/ICU experience required
  • Prior travel nursing experience required
  • Experience with CRRT and IABP required; Impella experience preferred
  • PALS and NIHSS certifications preferred
  • Two supervisor/peer references required (one supervisor reference required if candidate held a permanent position within the last 12 months)
  • Skills checklist completed within the past year required
  • Copies of certifications and driver's license required for consideration

Additional Information

  • Provide critical care nursing to complex, hemodynamically unstable patients requiring drip titration, ventilator management, and advanced monitoring
  • Charge nurse is primarily without patients; house supervisor available 24/7; hospitalist in-house 24/7; intensivist not always present
  • Respiratory therapy is available outside the ICU and responds as needed; the unit is working toward having RT stationed in the ICU 24/7
  • Orientation includes a general hospital orientation day, a full nursing orientation day, full-day computer/Epic training, and two 12-hour preceptored orientation shifts
  • Scrub color: Navy for RNs; solid color only, no embroidery or patterns; approved outerwear in grey, black, navy, or royal blue; closed-toe shoes required (no Crocs)
  • Candidates must reside more than 50 miles from the facility to be eligible
  • Travelers who have previously worked at any WVU Medicine location must have taken a 2-year break before returning; cumulative time working within the WVU system cannot exceed one year without a 2-year break
  • Travel duos are not accepted for this position
  • EKG testing is required for this ICU position (pass/fail)
