Job Details
An outpatient mental health therapist provides individual, couples, family, and/or group therapy sessions to clients in an outpatient setting, assessing their mental health needs, diagnosing disorders, and developing treatment plans to help individuals manage and overcome their psychological challenges, all while maintaining regular communication with clients outside of therapy sessions; this often includes conducting intake interviews, utilizing evidence-based therapeutic approaches, and collaborating with other healthcare professionals when necessary.
Key responsibilities:
- Client intake and assessment:
Conducting initial evaluations to gather comprehensive client histories, including presenting issues, symptoms, and relevant personal information.
- Diagnosis and treatment planning:
Utilizing clinical expertise to diagnose mental health disorders and develop individualized treatment plans based on client needs and evidence-based practices.
- Individual therapy sessions:
Providing one-on-one therapy sessions to clients, using various therapeutic modalities to address their specific concerns. Clinicians competent in service delivery to couples and families may also provide work with these populations.
- Group therapy facilitation:
The option to leading group therapy sessions for clients with similar challenges, facilitating discussion and supporting group dynamics.
- Ethical practice:
Adhering to professional ethical guidelines and standards of practice related to confidentiality, informed consent, and boundaries.
- Documentation and record keeping:
Maintaining detailed client records, including progress notes, treatment plans, and relevant clinical information on a timely basis
- Collaboration with other professionals:
Consulting with other healthcare providers, such as psychiatrists, primary care physicians, or social workers, to ensure coordinated care.
Skills and qualifications needed for an outpatient mental health therapist:
- Master's degree in psychology, counseling, social work or a related field
- Licensed or eligible for licensure as a mental health professional in the state of Iowa
- Strong clinical assessment and diagnostic skills
- Proficiency in various therapeutic approaches, such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), or Person-Centered Therapy
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to build rapport with clients and establish a trusting therapeutic relationship
- Strong crisis intervention and safety planning skills
- Cultural competency and sensitivity to diverse client populations

Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $70,000.00 - $105,000.00 per year
