Position Summary
The CAD & Die Shop Technician is responsible for designing, manufacturing, and maintaining wooden cutting dies used in the printing and packaging industry. This role combines computer-aided design (CAD) work with hands-on fabrication, requiring precision, technical skill, and a strong understanding of die-cutting processes.
Key Responsibilities
CAD Design & Layout
- Create and modify die line designs using CAD software based on customer specifications and production requirements
- Ensure accuracy of layouts, including cut lines, crease lines, perforations, and tolerances
- Collaborate with prepress and structural design teams to optimize dielines for manufacturing
- Prepare files for die production, including rule heights, materials, and cutting specifications
Die Manufacturing
- Produce wooden cutting dies using die boards, steel rule, and associated tooling
- Operate die-making equipment such as rule benders, saws, lasers, and ejection rubber applicators
- Insert and secure cutting and creasing rules with high precision
- Install ejection materials to ensure proper performance during production
Quality Control
- Inspect completed dies for accuracy, durability, and adherence to specifications
- Test dies and troubleshoot issues related to cutting performance, alignment, or waste stripping
- Make adjustments or repairs to ensure optimal functionality
Maintenance & Repair
- Maintain and repair existing dies to extend usability and reduce downtime
- Replace worn or damaged rule, rubber, or board components
- Track die usage and recommend replacements when necessary
Collaboration & Workflow
- Work closely with press operators, designers, and production staff to ensure seamless workflow
- Interpret job tickets, blueprints, and technical drawings
- Provide feedback on design feasibility and production efficiency
Qualifications
Education & Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent required; technical certification or associate degree preferred
- 2+ years of experience in die making, CAD design, or printing/packaging production preferred
Technical Skills
- Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., ArtiosCAD, AutoCAD, or similar)
- Experience with Impact CAD by Arden Software desirable
- Understanding of die-cutting processes, materials, and tooling
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and specifications
- Experience with die shop equipment and tools

- Ability to manage time and prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand for extended periods
- Manual dexterity for handling small tools and components
- Capability to lift and move materials up to 50 lbs
- Comfortable working in a manufacturing/shop environment
Work Environment
- Combination of office (CAD work) and production floor (die shop) settings
- Exposure to machinery, noise, and production materials
- Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) as required
