Job Description
The Estimator reviews construction documents and prepares accurate cost estimates for reinforcing steel, welded wire mesh, and related accessories. This role gathers and analyzes bid information, develops and submits bid documents, and coordinates closely with clients to align scope, contracts, and fabrication schedules. The position offers a strong opportunity for long-term growth within a stable, well-established construction-related business.
Responsibilities
- Review construction documents, including blueprints and specifications, to understand the full scope of work for each bid.
- Gather and organize information related to bidders lists, bid schedules, and project timelines.
- Prepare and issue Requests for Information (RFIs) to obtain additional details needed for accurate estimating, and track all addenda and updates.
- Develop detailed estimates for reinforcing steel, welded wire mesh, and accessories, ensuring accuracy and completeness.
- Prepare all required bid forms and documents in accordance with project and client requirements.
- Ensure timely completion and submission of estimates to meet bid deadlines.
- Coordinate and confirm the final scope of work, contract requirements, and fabrication schedule details with clients.
- Create or assist with placement drawings for rebar (detailing) when needed.
- Communicate effectively with clients to clarify project requirements and address questions.
- Troubleshoot field-related complications by collaborating with clients and internal teams to find practical solutions.
- Use estimating software, spreadsheets, and drafting tools to perform take-offs and cost calculations.
- Perform rebar take-offs by hand or using computer tools, ensuring accurate quantity calculations.
- Enter and update data in MS Excel spreadsheets, including moderate editing of formulas to support cost estimates.
- Collaborate with team members while also managing individual tasks and responsibilities independently.
- Apply strong math skills to pricing and cost estimation activities, both with and without a calculator.
Essential Skills
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, including plans, section cuts, elevation views, and details.
- Experience reviewing construction plans quickly and efficiently to support timely estimating.
- 1+ years of estimating experience preferred, particularly in construction-related projects.
- Experience with fabricating rebar or performing rebar take-offs preferred.
- Proficiency with estimating software and tools used for construction cost estimation.
- Ability to perform accurate cost estimates for reinforcing steel, welded wire mesh, and accessories.
- Good written and verbal communication skills for interacting with clients and internal teams.
- Strong construction knowledge related to pricing, cost estimation, and project-specific work.
- Proficiency with MS Word and Excel, including data entry and moderate formula editing in spreadsheets.
- Strong math skills, with and without a calculator, to support manual and computer-based take-offs.
- Ability to work well both independently and as part of a team.
- Dependability and a consistent, reliable work ethic.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience using AutoCAD or similar drafting software.
- Ability to create or interpret rebar placement drawings and detailing.
- Sales experience related to project-specific or construction business environments.
- Experience with drafting in a construction or structural context.
- Familiarity with bidding processes and preparation of bid documents.
- Strong troubleshooting skills for addressing field complications related to reinforcing steel or rebar.
- Interest in long-term career growth within a stable, well-established company.
Work Environment
This is a full-time, in-office role with typical hours from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The work takes place in an office environment that supports detailed review of construction documents, cost estimating, and coordination with clients and internal teams. Business casual attire is expected. You will regularly use computers, estimating software, and MS Office applications, especially Excel and Word, as well as drafting tools such as AutoCAD. The environment supports collaboration while also allowing focused, independent work, and offers a sense of job security and continuity within a long-established business.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Westport, MA.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $26.00 - $29.00/hr.
