Job Description

This Phlebotomist role focuses on performing high-quality specimen collection and processing while supporting overall laboratory workflow. You will draw blood and collect other specimens, ensure accurate labeling and handling, assist with troubleshooting and training, and make recommendations to improve work processes. The position requires strong attention to detail, excellent patient communication skills, and the ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced clinical or laboratory environment.

Responsibilities

  • Perform venipuncture and other blood collection procedures using straight needles and butterfly needles in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Collect and store specimens, including blood, urine, and fecal samples, in accordance with established procedures and protocols.
  • Explain the venipuncture and specimen collection process clearly and courteously to patients to ensure understanding and comfort.
  • Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify that all information is accurate and complete.
  • Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders to maintain specimen integrity.
  • Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against scripts or orders to ensure 100% accuracy.
  • Package specimens for transport, following required protocols to maintain proper temperature and specimen condition.
  • Store specimen samples at the appropriate temperature and place them in the correct collection containers or tubes, accurately labeling each sample.
  • Follow all procedures outlined by specific protocols to ensure specimens are transported in a manner that preserves their integrity.
  • Fully understand and interpret physicians’ orders related to laboratory tests and specimen collection.
  • Assist with troubleshooting issues related to specimen collection, processing, and workflow, and make recommendations to improve efficiency.
  • Support training activities by demonstrating proper phlebotomy techniques and specimen handling procedures as needed.
  • Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks in accordance with laboratory safety standards.
  • Update patient information accurately in the system and perform data entry related to specimens and test orders.
  • Answer telephone calls, provide laboratory results when appropriate, and respond to inquiries in a professional and timely manner.
  • Attend annual department trainings and stay current with laboratory procedures, safety requirements, and regulatory standards.
  • Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations, maintaining a safe and compliant work environment.
  • Deliver courteous, patient-focused customer service throughout the specimen collection and processing experience.

Essential Skills

  • Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, where required.
  • Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.
  • 2–4 years of overall experience in phlebotomy, healthcare, or a related clinical environment.
  • Proven proficiency in phlebotomy and blood draw techniques, including use of straight needles and butterfly needles.
  • Experience with specimen collection and processing, including labeling, centrifuging, splitting, and freezing samples.
  • Ability to accurately match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify test orders.
  • Strong data entry skills and accuracy in updating patient information and laboratory records.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for basic documentation and communication tasks.
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Thorough understanding of physicians’ orders and laboratory test requirements.
  • Knowledge of OSHA and DEP regulations and the ability to follow safety and compliance protocols.
  • Strong customer service skills and the ability to communicate clearly and courteously with patients and colleagues.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience working in a medical, healthcare, or clinical laboratory environment.
  • Experience handling various specimen types, including urine and fecal samples, following established protocols.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced setting while maintaining high accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Comfort with answering phone calls and communicating laboratory results or information to satisfy inquiries.
  • Experience participating in or supporting training activities related to phlebotomy and specimen processing.
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot workflow or specimen-related issues and recommend process improvements.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a patient-focused approach to care and service.
  • Reliability in attending required annual department trainings and keeping skills up to date.

Work Environment

This role is based in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting where you perform frequent blood draws and specimen collections throughout the day. You work with standard phlebotomy equipment, including straight needles, butterfly needles, collection tubes, and centrifuges, as well as computer systems for data entry and the Microsoft Office Suite for documentation. The environment requires adherence to strict safety, infection control, and regulatory protocols, including OSHA and DEP guidelines. You will handle biological specimens, perform decontamination tasks, and follow defined procedures for specimen storage and transport. Work typically involves standing for extended periods, interacting directly with patients and clinical staff, and managing multiple tasks and requests. Dress code generally follows professional clinical or laboratory attire appropriate for a healthcare environment, with any required protective equipment provided according to safety standards.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Winston-Salem, NC.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $19.00/hr.
