Summary
The Traffic Control Coordinator is responsible for planning, coordinating, and implementing traffic control operations to ensure the safety of the public, workers, and equipment in and around construction zones on heavy civil projects. This role ensures compliance with local, state, and federal regulations while minimizing disruption to traffic flow during construction activities.
Essential Responsibilities
- Develop and implement Traffic Management Plans (TMPs) in coordination with project teams, engineers, and municipal agencies.
- Coordinate the setup, maintenance, and removal of traffic control devices such as signage, barricades, cones, and flaggers.
- Monitor traffic control operations for compliance with safety standards and regulatory requirements (MUTCD, OSHA, DOT).
- Conduct site assessments to identify potential traffic hazards and provide mitigation strategies.
- Collaborate with subcontractors, public agencies, and utility companies to coordinate lane closures, detours, and work zone activities.
- Obtain and manage necessary permits for road closures and traffic control plans.
- Respond to traffic-related incidents and adjust control measures as needed to ensure public and worker safety.
- Provide training and guidance to flaggers and other personnel on proper traffic control procedures.
- Maintain accurate records of traffic control operations, incidents, and changes to TMPs.
Qualifications
- Minimum 3-5 years of experience in traffic control or construction site coordination, preferably in heavy civil infrastructure (roads, bridges, highways, utilities).
- Certification in Traffic Control (e.g., ATSSA Traffic Control Supervisor or equivalent) is highly preferred.
- In-depth knowledge of traffic control regulations, safety standards, and work zone safety practices.
- Strong organizational and communication skills.
- Ability to read and interpret construction plans, maps, and technical documents.
- Proficiency in using TMP design software (e.g., AutoCAD, Invarion RapidPlan) is a plus.
- Valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
