Care Access Referral Specialist
Location: Mobile, AL
Department: Clerical
Schedule: Monday - Friday, 3pm-12am
Employment Type: Regular Full-Time
Responsibilities
The Medical Referral Specialist is responsible for managing patient referrals and supporting smooth communication between patients, providers, and clinic staff. Key duties include:
- Serve as a primary point of contact for patients and healthcare providers regarding referral coordination and appointment scheduling.
- Make outbound calls to patients and physician offices to confirm referral preferences and appointment details.
- Handle inbound calls from patients, referral sources, and clinics regarding appointments or general inquiries.
- Manage referrals received via fax or electronic systems, ensuring timely and accurate processing.
- Provide high-quality customer service, answering questions and assisting patients with their needs.
- Work within electronic healthcare systems to:

- Review patient information and medical records.
- Schedule appointments and pre-register patients.
- Verify insurance coverage and coordinate prior authorizations when necessary.
- Communicate with clinic staff via electronic records or phone regarding referrals and patient needs.
- Track and maintain referral documentation, ensuring referrals are linked to appointments correctly.
- Coordinate ancillary and specialty appointments as needed.
- Support online referral systems and web-based tools to streamline referral processing.
- Prepare, order, and distribute medical records for upcoming appointments.
- Communicate updates and required information to clinic staff, ensuring smooth patient care operations.
- Provide accurate information on programs, services, and logistics such as directions or parking to patients and referring parties.
- Maintain regular attendance and adhere to scheduled hours, including occasional overtime as required.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- At least four years of clerical experience in a healthcare, call center, or customer service environment.
- Experience with electronic medical records or referral tracking systems preferred.
- Familiarity with insurance verification, prior authorizations, referral management, and appointment scheduling preferred.
