Job Summary
As an Intern, in Health, Safety & Environment (HS&E), your role would be to support the plant's efforts to maintain a safe, healthy, and environmentally responsible workplace, ensuring compliance with regulations, and fostering a culture of safety and sustainability among employees.
Responsibilities
- Safety Inspections and Audits: Conduct routine safety inspections of the manufacturing facility to identify potential hazards, unsafe practices, and compliance issues. Assist in performing safety audits to assess the effectiveness of safety procedures, equipment, and protocols.
- Safety Training and Awareness: Assist in developing and delivering safety training programs for employees to increase awareness of safety protocols, procedures, and best practices. Coordinate safety meetings or toolbox talks to discuss relevant safety topics and address concerns raised by employees.
- Incident Investigation and Reporting: assist in investigating workplace incidents, accidents, or near-misses to determine root causes and prevent future occurrences. Compile incident reports and documentation for regulatory reporting requirements and internal review processes.
- Emergency Response Planning: Participate in developing and updating emergency response plans and procedures for various scenarios, such as fires, chemical spills, or medical emergencies. Conduct drills and exercises to test the effectiveness of emergency response plans and ensure readiness in the event of an actual emergency.
- Environmental Compliance: Assist in monitoring environmental compliance with regulations related to air quality, water usage, waste management, and hazardous materials handling. Collect data and assist in preparing reports for environmental permits, emissions inventories, and regulatory submissions.
- Waste Reduction and Recycling Initiatives: Support efforts to reduce waste generation, promote recycling, and minimize the environmental impact of manufacturing operations. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to implement waste reduction initiatives and identify opportunities for process improvements.
- Safety Culture Promotion: Engage with employees to promote a positive safety culture and encourage active participation in safety initiatives. Recognize and reward employees for their contributions to safety and environmental stewardship efforts.
Requirements
- Education: Any education that is in progress with a College, University related to Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science or Environmental Engineering, Industrial Hygiene, Safety Engineering or Safety Management, or Environmental Health Sciences.

- Communication Skills: Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, are important for conveying safety procedures, delivering training sessions, and collaborating with colleagues and stakeholders.
- Teamwork and Collaboration: The ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams, including engineers, operators, and management, is essential for implementing HS&E initiatives effectively.
- Regulatory Knowledge: Familiarity with relevant health, safety, and environmental regulations, such as OSHA, EPA, and local regulatory requirements, is beneficial for ensuring compliance and avoiding regulatory violations.
- Technical Aptitude: Basic technical knowledge related to manufacturing processes, equipment operation, and hazard identification helps interns understand workplace risks and implement appropriate control measures.
