Position Description: Service Technician – Carpenter

Exempt: No

Reports to: Chief Engineer, Assistant Chief Engineer, or designee.

Regular Shift: Monday – Friday; 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM

Annual Salary: $32.87 – $37.78 per hour

Position Summary

The Service Technician performs skilled carpentry, painting, and general maintenance services in support of building operations at a large commercial facility in Washington, DC. This position provides essential support to the Engineering Department by maintaining and repairing interior finishes, furniture, fixtures, and general building aesthetics. The role also includes installation, fabrication, and upkeep tasks throughout offices, lobbies, restrooms, and other common areas.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

· Obtain work instructions from work orders or the Chief/Assistant Chief Engineer.

· Perform skilled carpentry, painting, and general maintenance activities including repairs to walls, doors, ceilings, floors, and fixtures.

· Operate maintenance shop tools and equipment safely and effectively.

· Apply paints, stains, and finishes to interior and exterior surfaces to maintain professional appearance.

· Construct, assemble, install, and repair wooden structures, cabinetry, and furnishings.

· Restore furniture finishes and repair or replace flooring materials, carpeting, wall coverings, and ceiling tiles.

· Install molding, ceiling tiles, drop cloths, masking tape, or paper to protect surfaces during construction or refinishing work.

· Inspect, adjust, maintain, and repair restroom partitions, fixtures, and hardware.

· Read and interpret construction drawings, sketches, and plans to determine required materials and measurements.

· Verify measurements and alignment with carpenter’s level, plumb bob, or other measuring tools to meet trade standards.

· Assemble and cut materials using nails, dowels, pins, or glue, as appropriate.

· Frame, erect, and laminate structures such as counters, bookcases, and display partitions.

· Erect scaffolding or ladders and post warning signage when performing work above floor level.

· Construct or repair picture, poster, and display frames.

· Maintain inventory of tools and supplies; prepare orders for replacement or new materials.

· Provide customer service consistent with organizational standards.

· Perform stage and panel setups and takedowns (e.g., auditorium, cafeteria, lobby).

· Replace or adjust lighting fixtures, lamps, outlets, switches, and door hardware.

· Support preventive maintenance and facility upkeep programs.

· Maintain all stored materials in a neat and safe condition.

· Follow safety policies and procedures to protect self, others, and property.

· Document work performed using CMMS or other reporting systems.

· Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

· Accredited training or certification as a Journeyman Carpenter or Painter (preferred).

· High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent international certificate required.

· Minimum of 5 years of experience in building maintenance, carpentry, painting, or construction.

· Knowledge of paints, preservatives, building materials, and protective finishes used in construction and maintenance.

· Ability to read and interpret plans, drawings, and work orders.

· Familiarity with OSHA safety standards and proper use of PPE.

· Excellent troubleshooting, time management, and customer service skills.

· Ability to work independently or as part of a team.

Physical Demands

Frequently lift and/or move objects up to 50 lbs.; occasionally up to 75 lbs. Regularly walk or stand for extended periods, handle tools and materials, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, or crawl as required. Must be able to work from ladders or elevated platforms.

Work Environment

Work performed primarily indoors; may include confined spaces or elevated areas. Occasional exposure to paint fumes, airborne particles, or construction environments. Standard schedule Monday–Friday, with occasional overtime or after-hours support as required.

Compensation & Benefits

Salary: $32.87 – $37.78 per hour.

Comprehensive benefits including health, dental, vision, retirement plan, and paid time off. Membership in Local 99 IUOE required.
