Mechanical CAD Detailer (PLM Systems)
Job Description
Job Description Mechanical CAD Detailer (PLM Systems)
Location: Pittsburgh (Cheswick)
A day in this role
Morning in Cheswick starts with you opening the Product Life Cycle Manager (PLM) system to review a new assignment: a master assembly that needs complete manufacturing documentation. You translate layouts and sketches into production-ready 3D models, then build out fully detailed, toleranced drawings and a clean Bill of Materials. By midday, you’re coordinating with the Lead Graphic Designer on interrelated parts to ensure form, fit, and function—capturing every required view, note, finish, and acceptance criterion in accordance with drafting standards. In the afternoon, you revise a marked print, resolve a shop question triggered by a dimension callout, and prepare assemblies for clearance analysis to confirm there’s room where it matters. You close the day documenting changes in PLM and touching base with a supplier on a standard component spec.
What you will do
- Create solid models and produce complete detail, assembly, manufacturing, and inspection drawings, including Bills of Materials, for products, parts, tools, dies, gauges, fixtures, and jigs from master assemblies, layouts, and general instructions.
- Coordinate drawings for parts and assemblies with interdependent operations or functions; ensure accuracy, completeness, proper views/illustrations, and conformance to drafting practices and standards.
- Update existing models and drawings; implement changes from marked prints and written or verbal directions.
- Communicate and coordinate activities with the Lead Graphic Designer when assigned to a Project Team.
- Source technical data from department manuals, standards, engineering reference handbooks, material and process specifications, and supplier catalogs to determine dimensions, tolerances, and finishes; interpret customer and supplier drawings to obtain all relevant information; choose methods based on established procedures.
- Maintain and utilize the Product Life Cycle Manager (PLM) system for searching, storage, retrieval, and release of databases.
- Perform minor design tasks under close supervision.
- Self-check models and drawings; prepare models and assemblies for clearance analysis.
- Apply practical knowledge of manufacturing processes, machine tools, fabrication equipment, and inspection techniques while preparing models and drawings.
- Investigate shop and supply management issues caused by drawing information; determine solutions and make corrections; refer complex design or standard-manufacturing-procedure issues to a higher-coded Graphic Designer or supervisor.
- Interact with customers, suppliers, and other external stakeholders during assigned projects.
- Stay current with advances in design, modeling, drafting techniques, materials, processes, and standard supplier products relevant to design projects.
- Perform other graphic designer (design/drafting) functions of similar or lesser complexity as needed.
What you bring
- Due to DoD requirements, candidates must be US citizens.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain DoD security clearances and approval.
- 1+ years of drafting experience.
- Associate degree in design drafting focused on mechanical equipment design, or equivalent.
- Strong attention to detail and the ability to learn quickly.
- Comfort working independently and as part of a team.
