Shipping and Receiving Clerk

Position Summary:

The Shipping and Receiving Clerk is responsible for coordinating the accurate and efficient flow of materials, products, and documentation into and out of a facility. This role supports warehouse, distribution, manufacturing, or retail operations by receiving inbound shipments, verifying quantities and condition, preparing outbound orders, maintaining inventory records, and ensuring shipping documentation is complete and accurate. The clerk works closely with carriers, vendors, drivers, and internal departments to resolve discrepancies, prevent delays, and maintain strong service levels while following established safety, quality, and company procedures.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Receive incoming shipments and compare packing slips, purchase orders, manifests, or invoices against actual quantities received.
  • Inspect materials for damage, shortages, overages, and quality issues, and promptly report discrepancies.
  • Unload, sort, label, stage, and store inventory in designated warehouse or stockroom locations.
  • Prepare outbound shipments by picking, packing, wrapping, labeling, and verifying orders for accuracy.
  • Create and process shipping paperwork such as bills of lading, shipping labels, carrier records, and internal tracking documentation.
  • Maintain accurate inventory records in warehouse management, inventory, or ERP (NetSuite) systems using scanners and data entry tools.
  • Coordinate pickups, deliveries, and shipment schedules with carriers, drivers, and internal departments.
  • Process returns, damaged goods, and nonconforming materials in accordance with company procedures.
  • Operate material handling equipment such as pallet jacks, hand trucks, or forklifts when authorized and required.
  • Keep shipping and receiving areas organized, clean, and compliant with safety and housekeeping standards.

Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.   • Education/Experience: High School diploma, GED, or equivalent. Experience working in a shipping or receiving department. Experience operating heavy machinery (forklift, etc.)
  • Language Ability: Read, analyze and interpret shipping documents. Effectively present information and respond to questions from managers, customers and the public.
  • Mathematical Ability: Must be able to conduct basic mathematical problems including calculating proportions, percentages, area, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
  • Computer Skills: To perform this job successfully, individuals must have basic-level computer related skills including familiarization with spreadsheet and MRP/ERP software.
  • Certificates and Licenses: None required.
