Job Description

Job DescriptionJob Title: Construction Superintendent
Job Description

The Construction Superintendent will lead field operations for tenant improvement and small commercial projects across the Indianapolis area. This field-based role (approximately 95% on job sites) focuses on true general contractor-style oversight, including schedule management, safety, sequencing, subcontractor coordination, documentation, and logistics. The superintendent will independently run projects in the $500K–$1M range (and up to approximately $2M depending on experience), with the opportunity to grow into larger and potentially ground-up work based on performance.

Responsibilities

  • Independently lead and manage tenant improvement and small commercial construction projects in the field.
  • Create, maintain, and update project schedules, using AutoDesk scheduling tools and strong knowledge of construction sequencing.
  • Develop and communicate short-interval look-ahead schedules and upcoming constraints to subcontractors and project managers.
  • Provide on-site leadership to enforce and promote jobsite safety practices and expectations for all workers and trade partners.
  • Plan and manage logistics, including material deliveries, site access, short material runs, and trade stacking to avoid conflicts.
  • Coordinate and manage subcontractors, ensuring accountability, quality, productivity, and timely completion of work.
  • Resolve on-site conflicts and issues promptly while maintaining professional relationships with trade partners and stakeholders.
  • Read and interpret blueprints and construction drawings to plan work sequencing and identify potential issues early.
  • Document field activities digitally, including progress notes, updates, issues, and changes, rather than relying on paper-only methods.
  • Compose and send professional emails to project managers, subcontractors, and other stakeholders to communicate status and needs.
  • Track and report field progress, constraints, and risks, escalating issues to the project management team as needed to keep projects moving.
  • Monitor daily site activity, often overseeing up to approximately 10 workers or trade partners on-site during busy phases.
  • Travel regularly to jobsites in and around the Indianapolis market and periodically to the home office in downtown Indianapolis.
  • Support continuous improvement in project delivery by proactively identifying problems and proposing practical solutions.
  • Demonstrate a growth-oriented mindset, taking on increasing responsibility and potentially transitioning into larger or ground-up projects over time.

Essential Skills

  • 2–5+ years of experience running construction jobs or large scopes with real responsibility for schedule, safety, and subcontractor coordination.
  • Proven experience in commercial construction, including tenant improvement and small commercial projects.
  • Strong general contractor-style oversight experience, with the ability to manage multiple trades under an umbrella of field leadership.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and construction drawings accurately.
  • Ability to translate plans into a logical, workable construction sequence.
  • Ability to draft basic project schedules from plans, with strong understanding of sequencing (software experience helpful but sequencing knowledge essential).
  • Comfort leading and coordinating jobs with approximately 10 trade partners or workers on-site during peak phases.
  • Proficiency with digital tools to document field activities, send professional emails, and track progress and issues (not limited to pen-and-paper methods).
  • Strong communication skills, including clear verbal communication and professional written communication.
  • Effective conflict management skills to handle on-site issues and resolve them promptly.
  • Solid construction supervision experience, including subcontractor management and coordination.
  • Organized and detail-oriented approach to tracking logistics, documentation, and daily site activities.
  • Self-starter mentality with strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently in the field.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience with commercial, retail, residential, institutional, or industrial construction projects.
  • Experience with tenant improvement projects and smaller commercial footprints.
  • Familiarity with AutoDesk or similar scheduling and construction management software.
  • Ground-up construction experience is a plus and may support growth into larger projects, though it is not required to start.
  • Experience coming from the trades with broad sequencing exposure (for example, drywall or other trades that interact with many disciplines) is beneficial.
  • Bilingual Spanish/English skills are a strong plus given workforce demographics, but not required.
  • College degree in Construction Management or a related field is a plus but not required.
  • Demonstrated desire to grow with a company and take on increasing responsibility over time.
  • Strong interpersonal and people skills to build effective working relationships with subcontractors, trade partners, and project teams.

Work Environment

This role is primarily field-based, with approximately 95% of time spent on active jobsites in and around the Indianapolis market. The superintendent works on site five days per week, both inside buildings and outdoors, often from a jobsite trailer. The position requires working in various weather conditions and being on-site for extended hours, with occasional weekend or evening work depending on project schedules. Regular travel to jobsites and periodic travel to the downtown Indianapolis home office are required, with vehicle gas reimbursed for travel beyond the assigned project and when monitoring multiple sites. The environment is fast-paced and hands-on, with frequent coordination among multiple trade partners and workers. The role includes access to digital tools and construction management software, and supports a professional culture that values safety, accountability, and collaboration. Benefits available upon conversion to full-time employment typically include paid time off, medical, dental, and vision coverage, a 401(k) with company match, and allowances for vehicle and phone expenses, along with reimbursement for project-related travel. The organization also offers periodic team events and outings, fostering a collaborative and engaging work culture.
