About the Program and Position Summary
The Henry L. Stimson Center (Stimson), a nonpartisan global security think tank located in Washington, DC, seeks a Staff Accountant. Reporting to the Accounting Director, the Staff Accountant will be a key part of the finance team, supporting the Accounting Director with an array of financial functions.
We seek an energetic, organized, detail-oriented, customer-focused, proactive, innovative individual who can excel in a dynamic environment.
Responsibilities:
- Perform general accounting functions;
- Prepare journal entries for review by the Accounting Director;
- Track international wires as needed to ensure successful payment, including interacting with bank personnel, vendors and staff;
- Prepare invoices as needed;
- Prepare multiple cost allocation schedules monthly;
- Assist the Accounting Director in research as needed;
- Assist in the preparation of the annual financial audit and intermittent programmatic audits;
- Assist in the preparation of the 990 and related activities;
- Ensure adherence to established procedures and internal controls;
- Ensure compliance with sponsoring agency regulations;
- Support the Accounting Director with various other activities and projects, as needed;
- Act as a backup for various accounting functions as needed; and
- Accounts Payable/Receivable.
Qualifications – required:
- Bachelor's degree in accounting/ CPA or equivalent work experience;
- Meticulous organizational skills and attention to detail; and
- Ability to be flexible, work in a fast-paced environment and respond to requests promptly.
Qualifications – preferred:
- Knowledge of nonprofit accounting requirements, GAAP and Uniform Guidance;
- Knowledge of foreign exchange transactions; and
- Intermediate Excel skills and familiarity with QuickBooks Online or similar accounting system.
