JOB SUMMARY
The Registered Nurse provides nursing care to patients in compliance with, but not limited to, Standards of Practice as defined by
ANA, AORN, ASPAN and State Practice Act Standards, and organization protocols, policies, procedures, and guidelines. Develops
implements, evaluates, and revises plan of care based on physical, psychosocial, spiritual, and educational needs of the
patient/caregiver. Maintains clinical knowledge and skills competencies to facilitate patient care in accordance with current
standards of practice and monitors the environment to provide safe patient care.
EDUCATION, LICENSURE/CERTIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE
· Education: Graduate of an accredited school of nursing
· Licensure/Certification: Current license to practice as a registered nurse in the state of Missouri. Successful completion of
BLS, ACLS within 90 days of hire, if not currently certified.
· Experience: Two years of operating room experience preferred
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Good visual acuity, accurate color vision. Ability to lift/transfer patients in excess of 100 pounds, which may require pushing,
pulling and essentially utilizing a full range of body movement. Ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch and/or crawl. Ability to
reach, grasp, use fine finger movement and feel fine sensation to discern temperature, texture, size and shape. Ability to speak
and hear.
MENTAL DEMANDS
Requires frequent and constant judgment, leadership, and the ability to make decisions and solve problems immediately;
occasionally in response to disasters or emergencies, actual events or drills. Requires English language skills for constant high-
level written and interpersonal communications. Ability to work well with physicians, employees, patients, and others.
ENVIRONMENTAL EXPOSURE
Exposure to blood borne pathogens. Exposure to chemical and electrical hazards.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
· Prepares/assembles equipment, instrumentation, and supplies for upcoming cases in accordance with the physician’s
preference cards
· Damp dusts all flat surfaces and lights in the operating rooms prior to opening sterile packs
· Assists with the preparation of the operating room for surgical procedures
· Ensures patient readiness for surgery including, but not limited to, NPO status, medication administration, surgical site
verification and marking and chart completeness.
· Implements plan of care safely and effectively and provides safe environment, including, but not limited to:
a. Positioning patient safely, padding bony prominences and ensuring respiratory and circulatory protection
b. Ensuring correct prepping and draping procedures
c. Conducting “time-out” process prior to incision to ensure correct patient, correct, procedures, and correct surgical
site.
d. Ensuring asepsis during all procedures. Opens and presents sterile items to sterile field aseptically; ensures supplies are not expired. e. Accounting for all sponges, needles, sharps, during and after the procedures and documenting appropriately. · Accurately records, labels, and handles specimens · Demonstrates competence in preparing and cleaning of O.R. suites before, between, and after cases. · Gives thorough report of patient’s intra-operative condition to PACU nurse · Demonstrates ability to respond to patient care and operating room needs in an emergency situation · Collaborates with other members of the surgical team to ensure efficient turn-around time between each procedure. · Respects patient’s privacy, dignity and confidentiality · Assists with housekeeping duties as necessary to provide a safe environment · Demonstrates the ability to understand and use various types of equipment in the operating room · Updates physician preference cards, as necessary · Able to perform all duties of a circulating room nurse · Recognizes legal and policy limits of individual responsibility · Provides clinical skills necessary to provide quality care according to patient’s age and stage of growth and development · Participates in the Quality Program, as directed by supervisor · Performs other duties as may be appropriately required or assigned
