We are a private practice, fast-growing, patient-focused eye care and eyewear practice seeking an experienced Optician/Optical Manager to lead and elevate our optical department. This role is ideal for a seasoned optical professional with strong technical expertise, leadership ability, and sales acumen who thrives in a fast-paced clinical environment.
Position Summary
The Optician/Optical Manageroversees daily optical operations while delivering exceptional patient care. This position requires advanced knowledge of ophthalmic lenses (materials and designs), vision plans, and dispensing techniques, and the use of manual lensometry. The Optician/Optical Managerwill manage inventory, solve complex optical challenges, drive sales performance, and train optical staff to consistently exceed patient expectations.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Patient Care & Dispensing
- Deliver world-class patient service throughout the eyewear selection and dispensing process
- Analyze prescriptions and recommend appropriate lens materials and designs (single vision, progressives, occupational, specialty lenses, coatings, and treatments)
- Perform accurate measurements, fittings, and adjustments
- Verify, neutralize, and inspect eyewear using manual lensometry
- Educate patients on lens options, adaptation expectations, and proper eyewear care
Vision Plans & Insurance
- Demonstrate proficiency with vision plans and benefits, including plan rules, allowances, and limitations
- Clearly explain patient benefits and out-of-pocket costs
- Ensure accurate insurance processing and proper documentation
Optical Management & Operations
- Oversee daily optical workflow to ensure efficiency and accuracy
- Manage inventory control for frames, lenses, and optical supplies
- Monitor job status, resolve delays, and manage uncollected eyewear orders
- Ensure compliance with protocols for remakes, returns, warranties, and vendor policies
- Understand cost of goods and retail pricing to support profitable dispensing
Sales & Performance
- Drive optical sales through consultative selling and product expertise
- Train staff on sales strategies, promotions, and capture-rate improvement
- Identify opportunities to maximize revenue while maintaining ethical patient care
Leadership, Training & Problem Solving
- Train, mentor, and teach optical staff on dispensing techniques, lens education, insurance workflows, and patient communication
- Serve as the primary point of escalation for optical-related issues and complex prescriptions
- Collaborate with optometrists to troubleshoot challenging cases and ensure optimal visual outcomes
- Resolve patient concerns professionally and efficiently
Experience & Qualifications
- Minimum 4 years of optical experience
- Proficiency in manual lensometry required
- Demonstrated experience with vision plans and insurance processing
- Strong knowledge of lens materials, lens designs, and optical products
- Experience with inventory management and optical ordering systems
- Leadership or supervisory experience preferred
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Advanced understanding of ophthalmic optics and dispensing best practices
- Proven ability to lead, train, and develop optical staff
- Strong sales, communication, and patient education skills
- Excellent problem-solving and decision-making ability
- Highly organized with the ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment
