Tax Accountant

Position Overview
We are seeking a detail-oriented Tax Accountant with a strong background in public accounting and demonstrated experience as a Tax Manager or in a tax management capacity. The role is responsible for preparing and reviewing federal, state and local tax returns, supporting tax planning and compliance projects, supervising staff on engagements, and serving as a trusted advisor to clients. The ideal candidate will combine technical tax knowledge with practical experience in public accounting, strong communication skills, and the ability to manage multiple engagements and deadlines.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare, review and file federal, state and local tax returns for individuals, partnerships, corporations, S-corporations and trusts, ensuring accuracy and compliance with current tax laws.
  • Manage tax engagements from planning through completion, including client communication, project timelines, billing and quality control.
  • Research complex tax issues and apply tax law to client situations; summarize findings and recommendations in clear, actionable memos for clients and internal teams.
  • Provide tax planning and advisory services, identifying opportunities to minimize tax liability and advising on the tax implications of business transactions and reorganizations.
  • Supervise, mentor and review work performed by staff and senior associates; delegate tasks and provide constructive feedback to develop team capabilities.
  • Coordinate and collaborate with other departments (audit, advisory, client services) to deliver integrated client solutions and ensure consistent client service.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of federal, state and local tax developments, laws, regulations and best practices; implement changes to processes and client advice as needed.
  • Assist with tax provision calculations, estimates, and responses to tax notices and examinations as required.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in Accounting, Finance or related field required; Masters in Tax or related advanced degree preferred.
  • Minimum 3-5 years of experience in public accounting with direct responsibility for tax compliance and planning; prior experience as a Tax Manager or in a tax management capacity is required.
  • Strong technical knowledge of federal, state and local tax laws and regulations across multiple entity types (individuals, partnerships, corporations, trusts).
  • Proven experience supervising and mentoring staff on tax engagements, with excellent project and time-management skills.
  • Proficiency with tax research tools and tax preparation software; comfortable learning and implementing new systems and technologies.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills; able to translate technical tax concepts into clear advice for clients and internal stakeholders.
  • Detail-oriented, analytical and able to work under pressure to meet strict deadlines while maintaining high quality.
  • Nice to have: Enrolled Agent (EA) designation and/or Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license.
