Summary:

The Healthcare & Wellness Specialist supports the well-being and academic success of veteran and military-affiliated students, as well as the general student population, through the delivery of social services, health advocacy, and wellness programming. This individual will provide in-person support on campus at least three (3) days per week, with occasional virtual meetings based on student needs.

In addition to student wellness services, this role involves assisting with outreach and recruitment efforts, helping veteran students access military benefits, and collaborating on events that raise awareness and increase veteran enrollment. Experience organizing or supporting student or veteran-focused events is strongly encouraged.

This position will report to the Program Coordinator of the Center of Excellence for Veteran Student Success (CEVSS) or other senior leadership as assigned.

Note: This is a grant-funded position. Employment is contingent upon the availability of grant funds. Should funding cease, the position may be terminated without cause with written notice.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide wellness-focused support services and referrals to veteran students and their families
  • Assist in developing and delivering wellness and social service programs for both veteran and general student populations
  • Support recruitment and engagement of veteran and military-dependent students
  • Collaborate with the on-site MCNY Social Worker to address student food insecurity, including food pantry coordination
  • Serve as a point of contact for veterans navigating military benefits or health-related resources
  • Maintain documentation of services and student progress
  • Participate in relevant training sessions and professional development opportunities as directed

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred, ideally in Social Work, Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Health Services, Sociology, or a related field
  • Experience working in a higher education, social services, or wellness-based environment is preferred
  • 1–3 years of experience working with veterans, students with disabilities, or underserved populations
  • Understanding of physical, cognitive, sensory, and psychological health conditions and their implications on student success
  • Familiarity with college support systems and veteran-related services
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong customer service orientation
  • Basic computer proficiency
  • Ability to resolve conflicts and address student concerns with empathy and professionalism
  • Work independently and as part of a team
  • Prioritize tasks, maintain confidentiality, and respond to diverse student needs
  • Physically assist with light lifting (up to 10 lbs) for food pantry and donation events
  • Adhere to safety, health, and institutional protocols
  • Maintain punctuality and reliability in attendance and communication
  • Ability to work between both Manhattan and Bronx campuses
