Description
American Traveler is hiring a travel RN for a Labor & Delivery position requiring at least 2 years of L&D experience, active ME or compact RN license, and a minimum of one completed travel assignment at a comparable facility.
Details
- Night shift position: 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM, 36 hours per week
- 13-week contract
- Level III NICU-affiliated Labor & Delivery unit serving a large geographic referral area as one of only two NICUs in Maine
- Unit includes 2 OBED triage rooms, 7 labor rooms, 2 additional triage rooms, a PreOp/PACU in the labor room, and 2 OR suites
- Approximately 1,800 deliveries per year with approximately 4 scheduled events daily (C-sections, versions, etc.)
- Patient population includes PIH, GDM, pre-eclampsia, eclampsia, HELLP syndrome, shoulder dystocia, postpartum hemorrhage, multiples, fetal loss, drug addiction, and cervical ripening cases
- Newborn care responsibilities include documenting feeds, vitals, and assessments for babies when mothers require continuous surveillance (e.g., Mag x 24 hrs)
- Patient ratios: cervical ripening and laboring 1:1–3, active labor 1:1, couplet/postpartum/antepartum 3 M/B couplets or 3 antepartum/NICU moms
- May float to Mother-Baby for antepartum, postpartum, or occasional newborn nursery coverage (excluding 24-hour labs)
- EMR: Cerner with Fetal Link; IV pumps: Alaris; medication dispensing: Pyxis; fetal monitoring: Fetal Link (remote at bedside and nurses station)
- Weekend rotation: minimum 4 of every 8 weekend shifts, which may be consecutive
- No on-call required; optional call shifts may be available
- Holiday rotation required
Requirements
- Active Maine (ME) or compact RN license required
- Required certifications: BLS, ACLS, NRP, Intermediate or Advanced Fetal Heart Monitoring (FHM), and MOAB
- Minimum 2 years of Labor & Delivery experience required
- At least one completed travel assignment at a facility comparable in size and acuity required — first-time travelers will not be considered
- Skills required include: Pitocin titration, fetal scalp electrode placement, cervical exams, epidural placement assistance, management of insulin and magnesium drips, shoulder dystocia management, circulating C-sections and/or receiving baby in OR, neonatal resuscitation, IUPC placement assistance and monitoring, and lactation support
- Flu vaccination required for employment eligibility (medical exemptions considered on a case-by-case basis)
- Two professional references within the past year required, with at least one from a supervisor, manager, director, or charge nurse — peer references not accepted
- Copies of all certifications required
- Full SSN required
- Driver's license copy required
Additional Information
- Candidates must have a permanent address located 100+ miles south/southwest of Bangor, ME to be eligible; candidates living 100+ miles north are reviewed on a case-by-case basis
- Candidates who have previously worked at any Northern Light Health Hospital in a permanent capacity are not eligible
- Charge nurse experience is a plus — candidates are encouraged to note any experience in a charge RN (CRN) capacity
- 3-day orientation: one day with HR/preceptor, one day of OR/PACU training, and one day with a preceptor on the night shift
- Unit support includes 24/7 charge nurse, anesthesia, house supervisor, RT, OB provider on call, CST in-house, and family medicine residents with attending backup; unit secretary and bed flow facilitator available on day shift only
- Navy scrubs are required and provided on-site via scrub machine (6 credits allotted); street clothes are worn to and from the facility
- Free parking available on site
