JOB ANNOUNCEMENT- Firefighter/EMT

DESCRIPTION

Carbondale Fire District is accepting applications for five full-time Firefighter/EMT positions, with a start date in April 2026.


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Must currently reside within a 75-mile radius of Carbondale Colorado
  • 21 years of age
  • Valid Colorado Drivers License
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Applicants must be able to perform all essential job functions as outlined in the job description
  • Ability to pass NWCG Arduous Pack Test

REQUIRED MINIMUM CERTIFICATIONS

  • Colorado Firefighter I with Hazardous Materials Awareness & Operations
  • Colorado EMT-Basic Certification
  • American Heart Association BLS for Healthcare Providers
  • Must obtain a minimum of FFII within 18 months of employment date
  • S130/190 Basic Wildland Firefighter
  • ICS 100/200 and IS 700/800


DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

  • Colorado Firefighter II
  • NWCG Wildland FF Type I
  • Associates or Bachelors degree
  • ICS -300

SHIFT SCHEDULE Full Time, 48 hours on 96 hours off

SALARY RANGE - $79,500 to $95,500 annual base for FFI/EMT-Basic, based on experience and certification level.

SELECTION PROCESS

  • Application deadline: February 25, 2026, at 1600 hours.
  • Invitations to continue in the process will be sent on February 27th.
  • Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications and whose applications are accepted will be invited to participate in an eight-hour ride-along scheduled between March 1 and March 15.
  • Assessment Center: March 16 or 17, 2026
  • Conditional job offers will be issued by March 23, 2026, and are contingent upon successful completion of a physical examination with a physician designated by Carbondale Fire, as well as passing the NWCG arduous work capacity test.
  • Start date: early April 2026

JOB DESCRIPTION- Firefighter/EMT

PURPOSE OF POSITION:

Performs firefighting and emergency medical services, including fire prevention, control, and extinguishment. Responsibilities include operating firefighting apparatus and emergency vehicles, conducting rescue operations, providing medical treatment and transport, participating in training, delivering public education, and completing station maintenance.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Respond to all-hazards emergencies and related public service activities as required. Works as an integral part of a firefighting unit, utilizing procedures and techniques as prescribed by the district; performing all required duties as necessary to support the district and its mission.
  • Perform duties as an EMT-Basic in accordance with CRFPD Protocols and SOGs.
  • Drive and operate fire, EMS, and rescue apparatus during non-emergency and emergency incidents.
  • Operate various rescue, emergency, and fire suppression equipment as needed, and inspects, repairs, and performs technical tasks related to maintaining assigned apparatus, equipment, and facilities.
  • Participate in cleaning and maintaining facilities, grounds, equipment and apparatus; ensure that appropriate conditions are maintained at assigned facility; ensure that all equipment and apparatus are in a constant state of readiness for emergency calls
  • Maintain proficiency in assigned roles consistent with the requirements of the position.
  • Familiarization with street names, occupancies within response zone and district boundaries as they apply to mutual aid.
  • Provide or aid in transportation of patients to medical care facilities; provide BLS assessments and treatments that are aligned with the roles and responsibilities of an EMT-Basic; maintain professional working relationship with receiving medical facilities.
  • Utilize department computer-based programs for documentation, records keeping, etc. Providing for limited access to sensitive materials.
  • Provide facility and apparatus tours to the public, give demonstrations of equipment to the public in a safe educational manner.
  • Provide and participate in trainings.
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, in the performance of Firefighter/EMT-Basic duties.
  • Perform other related duties and job tasks as assigned by supervisory staff.

  • Reasoning ability: Applies the principles of logic, scientific and medical thinking, and fire science judgment to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems using multiple, complex abstract and concrete variables in order to collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Physical activities: Sits for several hours at a time; may walk, stand, bend, stoop, reach, climb, carry and lift for short to long periods of time.
  • Lifting: May lift/carry and push/pull frequently 25 pounds and occasionally lift or move up to 185 pounds.
  • Vision and hearing: Must be able to read paper and electronic documents. Must be able to differentiate colors and shades of color, use peripheral vision and depth perception; must be able to see at night and/or in dark spaces. Must be able to hear sufficiently to converse with others and participate in meetings with large and small groups.
  • Exposure to environmental conditions: May be exposed to heat, cold, noise, smoke, water, odors, fumes, traffic, vibrations, grease/oil, dust/dirt, and other hazardous conditions.


SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Supervision is not a normal responsibility of the position. May provide training and orientation to newly assigned personnel on district policies and practices.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

Works under the direct supervision of the Shift Lieutenant or other superior officer as may be designated.
