Job Title: Direct Service Shelter Staff - 3rd Shift
Reports To: Residential Services Coordinator
FLSA Status: Full-time/part time hourly
This position is responsible for handling the front office in a shelter environment which operates 24/7/365. This includes meeting the immediate needs of the guests and visitors. A person in this position will actively participate in shelter activities and operations that assist guests. A person in this position acts as point person between the guests, internal case managers, and other departments to effectively communicate and document guest needs, events, incidents, and concerns.
This position requires a high level of communication, critical thinking, problem solving, and de- escalation skills, while requiring minimal supervision.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- High level of customer service is critical to perform all tasks successfully
- Communicate residence rules to clients and enforce rules as necessary
- Respond to questions and concerns from clients, staff, donors, volunteers, and guests
- Handle time sensitive guest and staff needs
- Communicate professionally and effectively, completing documentation in an effective and prompt manner per guidelines
- Observe and report client activities, concerns, and non compliance using appropriate communication process
- Follow all agency and mandated guidelines related to security, safety, confidentiality, and all departmental policies and procedures
- Handle admissions procedures regarding intake, late list and coordinated entry protocols
- Responsible for security check of all guests to ensure safety in the building
- Attend all department and assigned all staff meetings, as well as assigned trainings
- Model respectful conduct and interactions with guests, visitors and colleagues
- Participate in scheduled dorm sweeps with case management staff as assigned. Report on sweep findings and actions taken to case management
- Ensure effective and professional communication for guest information throughout all relevant departments
- Sort, log and distribute mail to mailboxes and complete office administrative tasks
- Document and review all relevant information in communication logs and complete all documentation/ paperwork in a timely manner
- Responsible for monitoring dining room and kitchen cleanliness
- Answer phones
- Perform tasks on the computer as needed, including checking and responding to emails
- Perform other duties as assigned by Lead Direct Service Support Specialist, RS Coordinator, and Manager of Residential Services
- Must be able to respond swiftly to emergency situations including leading evacuation and interventions
Experience and Skills:
- Experience and history working in human services environment, preferably working with male clients who have experienced homelessness
- Experience working with adults with severe and persistent mental illness and substance abuse issues
- Ability to communicate and document clearly and professionally: both verbally and in writing
- Demonstration of critical thinking and problem solving skills
- Professional workplace appearance and conduct
- Must be proficient in basic Microsoft programs
- Flexible work schedule and dependability
- Effective time management
- Experience working with clients in crisis and versed in de- escalation
Training and Education:
High school diploma or GED required
Must be able to function well under minimal supervision
High level of organization, communication, and documentation skills
