JOB PURPOSE:
The Furnace Department is primarily responsible to ensure the Caster/Hot Mill has sufficient molten aluminum of the right chemistry in the Holder for further processing. This includes the hauling of scrap from the East Building of purchased scrap, mill-generated back scrap from the West Building, the receiving of dumped loose scrap at Furnace 2, and any additional hardeners or additives to make the right chemistry in the three furnaces.
This also includes the proper processing for maximum aluminum recovery of dross generated during the melting process.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:
· Be a safety champion.
· Proactively Review, Support, Communicate and Enforce Jupiter safety policies and procedures.
· Help maintain a safe work environment for all department employees.
· Ensure safe and efficient operation of all mobile equipment.
· Assist in management of uniforms and monitor their use.
· Monitor employee locker rooms and break areas for unsafe conditions.
· Always monitor and enforce the use of all required PPE.
· Issue department specific PPE and maintain supplies.
· Encourage and support the reporting of all incidents, with or without injury.
· Conduct weekly departmental safety audits, employee observations and training.
· Encourage all employees to maintain safe working conditions.
· Maintain 5S Housekeeping Standards throughout the department.
· Promptly complete Incident Reports regarding employee injury, near miss or property damage incidents if no Shift Supervisor is assigned at the time.
· Actively participate in incident investigation and be a driver of corrective action.
· Make emergency notification when required.
· Become familiar with and understand Jupiter’s obligations and commitment to environmental compliance.
· Ensure operations always operate within regulatory requirements.
· Through routine inspection, ensure all pollution control equipment is operating normally and report abnormal conditions discovered.
· Monitor all critical operating parameters to maintain safe operating conditions.
· Collect, review, and maintain all required operational-related records.
· Inspect furnace charge material for contamination that may result in an operating upset.
· Be observant of conditions requiring a response to any material spill, indoors or outdoors.
· In the event of a petroleum spill, ensure prompt response including clean-up.
· Participate in the management of waste generated within the department.
- Working with Shift Supervisors, and Department Managers to develop:
o Annual operating budget and continuous improvement plan
o Identify capital project needs for the Furnace Department Annually
- Coordinate outside department activities within Furnace Department such as:
o Engineering for furnace and equipment outages
o Maintenance for equipment repairs and mobile equipment issues
o EHS for environmental and safety-related issues
o Purchasing/Receiving for purchased scrap coordination
o Coordinating Shipping for dross truck shipments
o Planning for coordination of Hot Mill runs and furnace operation (and chemistries)
o Outside vendors for spare parts and service work
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
· A Bachelors degree or equivalent work experience
· The ideal candidate for this position will have production supervision experience
· Experience working within a union environment
· A minimum of 2 years supervisory experience
· Steel, Aluminum, or heavy industrial production environment experience preferred
· Critical thinking skills
· Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
· Good leadership, technical, and troubleshooting skills
· Proactive with the ability to take initiative; excellent time-management skills
· Excellent verbal and communication skills
· Detail-oriented with excellent organizational skills
PHYSICAL AND MENTAL DEMANDS:
· Prolonged periods of standing, walking, sitting, and working on a computer
· Must be able to access and navigate the organization's facilities
