Job Title: Phlebotomist
Job Description
This Phlebotomist role focuses on performing high-quality blood draws and specimen collections while supporting smooth laboratory workflow. You will collect, label, process, and store specimens according to established procedures, assist with troubleshooting and training, and help identify opportunities to improve efficiency. The position requires a strong commitment to patient care, attention to detail, and adherence to safety and regulatory standards.
Responsibilities
- Perform blood draws and venipunctures using straight needles and butterfly needles, ensuring patient comfort and safety.
- Clearly and courteously explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures, such as urine and fecal collections, to patients.
- Collect and store specimens in accordance with established procedures and protocols.
- Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify all information for accuracy.
- Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders.
- Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against the script or orders to ensure 100% accuracy.
- Package specimens for transport, following required procedures to maintain specimen integrity.
- Store specimen samples at the required temperature and place them in appropriate collection containers or tubes.
- Follow specific protocols for handling and transporting specimens to preserve quality and reliability of results.
- Fully understand and interpret physicians’ orders related to laboratory testing and specimen collection.
- Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks as needed to support a clean and safe work area.
- Update patient information accurately in the appropriate systems or records.
- Assist with troubleshooting workflow issues and make recommendations to improve efficiency and quality.
- Participate in training activities and help support the development of less experienced staff when needed.
- Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all applicable safety guidelines.
- Attend annual department trainings and maintain required knowledge of procedures and regulations.
- Answer telephone calls in a professional manner and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries as appropriate.
Essential Skills
- Demonstrated experience performing blood draws and venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.
- Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures.
- Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, where required.
- Proficiency in phlebotomy techniques, including use of straight needles and butterfly needles.
- Ability to accurately label, centrifuge, split, freeze, and store specimens according to test orders and protocols.
- Strong attention to detail when matching laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verifying orders.
- Ability to clearly explain specimen collection procedures to patients in a courteous and professional manner.
- Understanding of and compliance with OSHA and DEP regulations and safety standards.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- 0–2 years of overall experience in a related medical, healthcare, or laboratory environment.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Phlebotomy certification, where not mandated, is strongly preferred as a demonstration of professional competence.
- Experience providing patient care in medical, healthcare, or clinical settings.
- Experience working with pediatric and geriatric patient populations.
- Comfort working in a fast-paced environment while maintaining accuracy and patient focus.
- Strong communication and customer service skills when interacting with patients, clinicians, and laboratory staff.
- Ability to read and relay laboratory results over the phone in a clear and accurate manner.
- Willingness to participate in ongoing training and to adapt to updated procedures and protocols.
Work Environment
This role operates in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting that requires consistent attention to detail and adherence to safety protocols. You will work with standard phlebotomy equipment, including straight and butterfly needles, specimen tubes, collection containers, and centrifuges, as well as computer systems and Microsoft Office Suite for documentation and reporting. The environment involves frequent interaction with patients, including pediatric and geriatric individuals, as well as regular communication with clinical and laboratory staff by phone and in person. Work includes handling biological specimens, following strict protocols for decontamination, specimen storage, and transport, and complying with OSHA and DEP regulations. The position typically follows established departmental schedules and training requirements, with an expectation of maintaining a professional appearance appropriate for a clinical and laboratory setting.

This is a Contract position based out of Asheville, NC.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $20.00/hr.
