Job Title: Plant Maintenance Electrician

Department: Maintenance

Classification: Hourly, non-exempt

Reports to: Plant Automation Engineer/Maintenance Manager

Shift Responsibilities: Mainly day shift, nights/weekends as needed.

OVERVIEW

The Plant Electrician is responsible for installing, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing electrical systems and equipment across all areas of the Suntado facility. This role ensures the reliable and safe operation of plant machinery, power distribution, lighting, and control systems in support of production, utilities, and site infrastructure. Working both independently and as part of the broader technical team, the Plant Electrician minimizes downtime and supports continuous improvement in a regulated, food-grade environment. This position shares responsibility for maintaining Suntado’s food safety, quality and legality program under the BRC guidelines.

You will:

  • Install, maintain, and repair electrical systems throughout the facility, including power distribution, motors, VFDs, PLC-controlled equipment, lighting, and associated wiring.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve electrical faults using technical documentation, test equipment, and root cause analysis skills.
  • Perform preventive maintenance, inspections, and corrective repairs on electrical systems and components to maximize equipment reliability.
  • Program and maintain variable frequency drives (VFDs) and motor control centers.
  • Read and interpret electrical drawings, schematics, and P&IDs.
  • Ensure all electrical work complies with NEC, NFPA-70E, OSHA, and Suntado’s safety policies, including lockout/tagout and proper PPE usage.
  • Log equipment usage, parts replacement, and maintenance tasks in the CMMS to ensure accurate recordkeeping and support robust maintenance routines.
  • Respond to plant emergencies and breakdowns to restore safe operation as quickly as possible.
  • Collaborate with other maintenance and production teams to troubleshoot and resolve cross-functional issues.
  • Support and mentor other technicians and operators in safe electrical work practices.
  • Provide support to vendors and contractors on-site for commissioning, PMs, retrofits, and other projects as needed.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Safety, Responsiveness, and Record Keeping

  • Implement, monitor, and uphold high standards of safety in all aspects of electrical work.
  • Maintain accurate records of maintenance, repairs, and inspections in the CMMS.
  • Participate in safety programs, risk assessments, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Training and Engagement

  • Foster a presence on the plant floor, working proactively with operators and maintenance personnel to troubleshoot and solve problems in real time.
  • Provide coaching, training, and support to team members, including on-the-job mentoring of best practices in electrical safety and troubleshooting.

Technical

  • Install conduit, wire, panels, MCCs, and equipment per engineering drawings and site standards.
  • Inspect, test, and repair motors, transformers, switchgear, relays, power panels, and lighting systems.
  • Troubleshoot and maintain PLC-controlled and automated equipment.
  • Use diagnostic equipment (multimeters, meggers, etc.) to verify and repair circuits.
  • Identify and isolate electrical hazards before work; ensure proper grounding and lockout/tagout.
  • Support capital projects, plant upgrades, and new equipment installations as needed.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Current Journeyman Electrician license (Idaho or reciprocal state) required.
  • 5+ years’ experience in industrial or plant electrical work preferred, especially in food, beverage, or manufacturing environments.
  • Technical or trade schooling, military experience, or related certificates a plus.
  • Strong knowledge of NEC, NFPA-70E, OSHA requirements, and industrial safety best practices.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Proficient in reading and interpreting electrical schematics, P&IDs, and blueprints.
  • Experience with 480VAC/277VAC/120VAC/24VDC systems, 3-phase motors, and control circuits.
  • Demonstrated ability to use diagnostic equipment (multimeter, megger, etc.).
  • Familiarity with PLC systems (Allen Bradley preferred) and industrial automation a plus.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office and experience with CMMS preferred.
  • Excellent analytical, troubleshooting, and communication skills (written and verbal).
  • Ability to work independently with little supervision, and perform in a fast-paced environment.

Physical demands of the position are heavy lifting up to 50 pounds, walking, climbing, and bending flexibility. Must be able to work safely in varying temperature extremes since equipment is often located on rooftops and other unconditioned spaces. Safely work on ladders, scaffolding, platforms, and other types of lifts.
