Our ideal candidate is tapped into pop culture and fandoms, is passionate about comics and graphic novels, and is well-versed in the middle grade and YA graphic novel spaces. This person thrives in fast-paced environments, communicates clearly & effectively, collaborates well with all types of people, and feels confident shaping a story from concept through publication. Ideally, you love fanfic and consider yourself right at home at cons.


Position Overview

Responsibilities will include creative development of original concepts and stories that enhance and build upon some of the biggest brands and entertainment for children and teens. This is a position that best suits personalities who genuinely enjoy thinking outside the box, although you will also need to stay very organized to succeed. You should consider yourself adept at soliciting top-tier talent, and you should have strong existing relationships with agents. Come put your stamp on our exciting and innovative program!

Responsibilities:

  • Edit approximately 10-12 licensed graphic novels per year across categories including YA, middle grade, early GNs, and the occasional comic picture book
  • Develop select brands/projects alongside executive editor & departmental leadership
  • Assist in managing the editorial relationships with key licensing partners such as Lucasfilm, Marvel, Disney, Hasbro, and Netflix; liaise with adult and calendar divisions as needed
  • Manage and route P&Ls & participate in sales conferences and launch

  • Develop, nurture, and maintain new and existing relationships with authors, artists, agents, and industry professionals
  • Collaborate with sales and marketing departments on positioning and plans for titles and programs, as well as communication of plans and strategy to licensors/authors/illustrators/agents; be a strong advocate for titles and programs in terms of cross-promotional opportunities and support from licensors
  • Attend key trade shows and consumer conferences and cons as needed

Qualifications & Skills:

  • A passion for pop culture and children’s entertainment a must; ability to edit across age groups and categories within the graphic novel space
  • Should possess strong knowledge of the children’s book market and an ability to identify opportunities with an eye toward forthcoming trends
  • Minimum of 5 years editorial experience in children’s books and/or entertainment publishing. Graphic novel experience a must.
  • Desire and ability to work collaboratively, respectfully, and enthusiastically in an environment where creativity, innovative thinking, and an excellent work ethic are highly valued
  • Knowledge of the manufacturing and production processes for 4-color formats
  • Excellent written & verbal communication skills
  • Well-honed negotiation skills & an understanding of contracts
  • Strong, established relationships with agents & industry colleagues
  • Established graphic novel market knowledge, including awareness of design trends
  • Ability to juggle multiple projects and meet tight deadlines; strong organizational skills
  • Experience in content development is a plus
  • Ideal candidate is an ambitious, adaptable self-starter
  • Proficient knowledge of MS Office (specifically: Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)
