POSITION OVERVIEW
The Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner (NP) is a licensed independent practitioner that serves as a primary and/or specialty care provider. The NP works autonomously and/or in coordination with other healthcare professionals. The NP is responsible for facilitating advanced primary and specialty nursing services to the health center’s patients within the scope of their licensure. They possess the training and competency required while using national standards of care as a framework for managing patient care and acts as advocate for policies and practice that benefit the patient/community.
KEY ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Conduct psychiatric evaluations and assessments.
- Conduct mental status examinations and pharmacological evaluations.
- Prescribe medications, teach clients about side effects and monitor response to prescribed medications, including ordering of laboratory tests as needed.
- Administer injectable medications as needed.
- Complete all documentation (i.e. progress notes and psychiatric assessments) as required in a timely manner in the electronic medical record (EMR).
- Review and provide recommendations for treatment plans.
- Provide expedited services to clients based on risk assessment status as clinically indicated.
- Provide crisis intervention services to clients as needed.
- Communicate with other medical practitioners in order to coordinate treatment for clients.
- Speak with managed care insurance representatives to obtain authorizations for prescribed medications when needed.
- Participate in staff meetings and case conferences.
- Collaborate with primary therapists, clinical supervisor and program director to discuss status of client progress in treatment and provide input/guidance on treatment planning and risk management issues.
- Maintain an 80% show rate for clients who are scheduled for regular appointments.
- Provide a behavioral risk screening for new patients and share the findings with the primary care team.
- Provide a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation as requested.
- Provide ongoing psychopharmacological management as clinically appropriate.
- Recommend and provide behavior management interventions as appropriate and functions as a member of behavior rapid response team.
- Collaborate psychiatric management with the members of the primary care team and the attending psychiatrist.
- Participate in inter-departmental collaborative committees as needed and quality assurance and performance improvement activities.
- Document clinical activities in the medical record and maintain documentation of administrative activities.
- Maintain a collaborative relation with an attending psychiatrist for all clinical activities and seek supervision as needed.
REQUIREMENTS
- Active and unrestricted New York State Nurse Practitioner License.
- Active and unrestricted New York State Registered Professional Nurse License.
- An advanced degree, either an MSN (Master of Science in Nursing) orDNP(Doctor of Nursing Practice) from an accredited nursing program.
- Board certification from The American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) or The American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP).
- Application and/or maintenance ofNationalProvider Identifier (NPI).
- Active and unrestricted Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) registration.
- Active and unrestricted DATA 2000 Waiver (buprenorphine), if applicable.
- NYS mandated Infection Control certification (NYS DOH approved; 4 hours, valid for 4 years).
- Current Basic Life Support certification.
- Must obtain Mandatedreporter(2 hours) within thirty (30) days.

- Three years of practical experience in ambulatory carerequired.
- Sound understanding of all federal, state and oversight agency regulations.
- Knowledge of disease prevention.
- Ability to work on a strong team of professionals in a culturally diverse environment.
- Ability to multitask and to work and function under pressure.
- Bilingual – Spanish strongly preferred.
