Lead Oncology Technician – Veterinary Specialty Hospital

Position Overview
The purpose of this position is to assist with employee training and evaluations to ensure patients consistently receive the highest level of care. Our goal is to deliver consistent communication to our employees, so this position will act as an extension of the management team to ensure changes are going into effect seamlessly. Any questions and feedback will be reported to the Director, if necessary, adjustments will be made. The Supervising technician will recognize non-routine or unusual situations and refer them to the Director with recommended solution(s).
What You’ll Do
- Oversee daily oncology department operations, ensuring efficient workflows, optimal patient care, smooth patient/client flow, and completion of daily checklists.
- Lead and support oncology technicians and assistants by assigning duties, directing patient traffic, conducting shift rounds, and maintaining appropriate staffing levels (including scheduling, managing call-outs, and securing coverage as needed).
- Serve as the primary liaison between staff and leadership, addressing concerns, resolving informal employee issues, maintaining effective communication, and providing regular updates and reports on operations, performance, and patient care metrics.
- Develop, implement, and enforce department protocols, treatment procedures, safety standards, evacuation procedures, and regulatory compliance measures.
- Monitor team performance through ongoing technical evaluations, performance reviews, skills assessments, and improvement plans; foster a positive, professional work environment that promotes teamwork, accountability, and confidentiality.
- Lead onboarding and training initiatives by assessing new hire skill levels, facilitating structured training programs, providing feedback and progress reviews, and coordinating continuing education (on-site and off-site) to address skill gaps.
- Manage and maintain accurate documentation, including staff schedules, training records, patient charts, treatment protocols, medication accuracy checks, equipment logs, and compliance reports; audit charts for completeness and refer clinical questions appropriately.
- Oversee CT equipment operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, safety training, and usage documentation to ensure regulatory compliance and operational readiness.
- Monitor patient flow and operational performance, identify process improvement opportunities, and contribute to strategic planning, departmental meetings, and project execution.
- Prepare and present regular administrative and performance reports to leadership, highlighting patient care outcomes, operational efficiency, staffing needs, and areas for improvement.
What We’re Looking For
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED.
- Leadership experience in a veterinary clinical setting.
- Minimum 2 years of experience in a veterinary clinical setting (general practice or urgent care).
- Demonstrated competency in patient triage, restraint, and basic nursing skills.
- Proficient in emergency procedures: rapid triage, oxygen therapy, IV catheterization, venipuncture, and fluid resuscitation.
- Knowledge of shock protocols, toxicities, transfusion setup, and anesthetic monitoring.
- Accurate medical record documentation and EMR proficiency.
- Skilled in laboratory diagnostics (CBC, chemistry, urinalysis, cytology, blood gas).
- Competent in radiographic positioning, safety, and interpretation support.
- Accurate medication preparation, labeling, and dispensing verification.
- Clear, compassionate communication with clients and team members; maintains composure in high-stress situations.
- Supports onboarding and training of new staff; identifies workflow improvements.
- Maintains confidentiality, professionalism, and adherence to hospital policy.
Preferred Qualifications
- Graduate of an AVMA-accredited Veterinary Technology program.
- Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT/CVT/RVT) in Texas or eligible within 6 months.
- RECOVER CPR certification or equivalent emergency life-support training.
- 2–4 years of experience in a 24-hour emergency or specialty hospital.
- Demonstrated ability to assist in emergency stabilization, anesthesia induction, and post-operative recovery.
- Experience in fast-paced, multi-doctor environments.
- Familiarity with specialty services such as internal medicine, surgery, or critical care.
- Exceptional emotional control, empathy, and reliability under pressure.
- Demonstrates initiative and a growth-oriented mindset; pursues continuing education in emergency and critical care.
