How to Write a Medical Assistant Resume (with Examples)

Written by Kate Lopaze

Certified medical assistants (CMAs) are some of the most versatile allied health professionals out there. They can work with patients, keep meticulous charts, field phone calls, make sure tools and equipment are sterilized and ready to go for the doctors and nurses, handle copayments and insurance, and make sure the waiting room is tidy and welcoming—all in a single shift. Medical assistants may be more administrative or more clinical, depending on the job and the setting, but they all have one thing in common: they help keep a medical practice humming along. If you are considering this rewarding field or are already in it, looking to move up, we have some sample resumes to help you boost your own.

Let’s look at three different CMAs’ resumes: one just starting out, another with experience under her belt, and a third who’s looking to move on to a teaching position. First up is Steve, our medical assistant newbie.

Steve doesn’t yet have a ton of experience as a full-fledged medical assistant, but he does have a background that includes internships and working in various medical/administrative offices. In his resume, it’s crucial to make sure that the experience and skills he does have shine through for the reader. He’s still working on his certification, but he notes this under “Education” so that the reader knows it’s coming soon even though he’s not fully certified yet. If your education is still in progress, it’s fine to list where your progress stands. The key strengths at the beginning of the resume are the areas that Steve wants the reader to focus on as they review his experience. This way, he funnels the reader down through the points he most wants to convey, instead of just throwing a lot of general information at the reader.

A more traditional format (the reverse-chronological format, which puts experience front-and-center) works well for Keisha. She has years of great experience, so wants to feature those as the most important aspect of her professional life so far. Also note that while her duties may have been fairly similar from job to job, she doesn’t repeat the bullets verbatim. Nothing will make a reader glaze over faster than reading the same lines over and over.

Last but not least, we have Pippa, who’s been a Certified Medical Assistant for ten years, but is looking to jumpstart her healthcare career by shifting her focus to teaching.

Like the other CMA resumes we’re reviewed, Pippa emphasizes patient care and great organizational skills, because those are the heart of he field. But because she wants to branch out and work in teaching as well as working in a medical office setting, she also emphasizes the skills that would make her successful there: training, mentoring, working with people. She uses her resume to show that she has experience working on projects outside of the usual medical assistant duties.

Pippa is also up front about her goal: she uses her leading statement as an objective to signal to the reader that she is looking to change roles, even though most of her experience is in one particular area.
