This position is, in essence, a cross-over between research and journalism. Our writers have several goals in their work: they strive to write articles that stay relevant for a long period of time, by relying on data that gets regularly updated by our data team. Secondly, they work with data scientists to build up-to-date interactive visualizations that users can explore for themselves.
To thrive in this role, you’ll need to be an excellent writer and have good quantitative skills; you’ll need to understand complex research, be able to interpret large global datasets on a broad range of topics, and find a way to communicate these findings to a general audience clearly. Overcoming the “curse of knowledge” — ensuring that our data and research are accessible and engaging to those without existing knowledge of the topic — is crucial. This position requires a strong understanding of design principles, user experience, and creating engaging visuals that resonate with diverse audiences. Responsibilities for this role include:

<li>Collaborate with the marketing communications team to create visually appealing and effective marketing materials, including brochures, posters, infographics, web layouts, and social media graphics</li>
<li>Develop innovative and compelling visual concepts that align with marketing strategies and objectives</li>
<li>Ensure all designs adhere to brand guidelines and maintain a consistent visual identity across all materials </li>
<li>Optimize graphics and web layouts for various digital and print channels to enhance user experience </li>
<li>Coordinate with the knowledge management team as needed for publication of web content</li>
<li>Coordinate with UI/UX designer to ensure web content provides an engaging and user-friendly experience</li>
<li>Collaborate in the creation, maintenance, and improvement of web content</li>
<li>Make recommendations for improving web content accessibility</li>
<li>Ensure products conform to all production standards, copyright laws, accessibility compliance requirements, and public release protocols</li>
<li>Conduct technical quality checks</li>
<li>Manage an approved concept and build it in HTML/CSS so it complies with responsive design principles</li>
<li>Stay updated with industry trends and best practices in design, web development, and user experience to inform and improve design decisions</li>
</ul>
Security Clearance: Secret Location: Crystal City, VA, with some remote work possible after onboarding Travel: Some travel required (&lt;10%) Required Education, Experience, and Skills:
<ul>
<li>Bachelor's degree in graphic design, web design, multimedia, or a related field</li>
<li>At least 3 years of professional experience as a graphic designer/web designer</li>
<li>Proficiency in graphic design software, such as Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign), Sketch, or similar tools</li>
<li>Strong understanding of web design principles, user experience, and responsive design</li>
<li>Strong working knowledge of relevant MS applications, including Visio</li>
<li>Proven development of innovative and impactful solutions</li>
<li>Extensive experience supporting the development, preparation, production, coordination, and editing of a range of products</li>
<li>Ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams to translate marketing objectives into visually compelling designs</li>
<li>Experience designing materials for diverse audiences, including individuals from different cultural backgrounds and age groups</li>
<li>Ability to use design elements to communicate complex information in a visually engaging and accessible way</li>
<li>Portfolio highlighting a diverse range of design projects, including graphics, web layouts, and marketing materials</li>
<li>Active Secret Clearance REQUIRED</li>
<li>Experience with U.S. Army a plus</li>
