WORKING CONDITIONS
Environmental
Office and emergency firefighting environments with exposure to fire surroundings and intense heat, potential structural collapse, falls, and possible electrocution at emergency scenes. Exposure to animal and human blood, infectious diseases, and other fluids; hazards of emergency driving. Subject to inclement weather such as extreme heat, cold, dampness, and dry atmospheric conditions. Work may be performed in areas with grease and oils, radiant energy, electrical energy, explosives, silica, dust, asbestos, toxic chemicals, fumes, smoke, gases, and solvents.
Physical
Work in confined spaces, sometimes below ground, often climbing ladders and scaffolds. Work irregular hours on a 48/96 shift schedule, which is sometimes stressful. Will work with machinery and environment can get quite noisy. Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may require maintaining the physical condition necessary for walking, standing, sitting, crawling, kneeling, repeated bending, and climbing. POSITION SUMMARY

Under the direct supervision of the Fire Chief/Captain, the Firefighter will uphold the Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians (the Tribe) Fire Department’s stated mission statement, core values, and goals.  Firefighters are required to perform skilled emergency service work including fire suppression, emergency medical, hazardous materials, and non-emergency duties such as fuel reduction, fire prevention, public assistance and education.  Firefighters must be able work for extended periods of time at emergency incidents that may involve physical exertion often under adverse environmental conditions.  This position is an arduous position and subject to medical screening, physical fitness training, and random drug testing.  This job description is for the entry-level and seasonal classifications.
This position may or may not be engaged in firefighting activities, but will be directly working under supervision in training, fuels reduction projects, team building, outdoor recreation management, and various projects that require basic use of a variety of firefighting tools and techniques. 
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

QUALIFICATIONS
For GS-05: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-04 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: 1) Controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade; 2) Assisting with rescue operations; 3) Detecting, reducting, or eliminating potential fire hazards; 4) Operating fire communications equipment; 5) Controlling hazardous material incidents; and 6) Assisting in fire protection and prevention. Certifications Required: ***This position requires the incumbent to possess the following certifications: Firefighter I/II, Airport Firefighter for Naval Station Whidbey Island only, HAZMAT Operations, CPR. Applicants new to Federal Service will receive as starting salary at a higher step through Special Needs Pay. The salary below reflects pay for a 40 hour work week. This position is 72 hours per week and salary will increase accordingly. Entry Salary will be set as follows:

You will be required to work a rotating work schedule which includes nights, weekends, holidays, and is subject to mandatory overtime and recall.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The duties of this position are physically demanding and require a physically able employee. Ability to lift and move heavy objects. Must be able to wear protective clothing, such as firefighter ensembles weighing 50-60 pounds. Climbs ladders and works at various heights. The work requires above average agility and dexterity. To meet those demands, physical fitness training is required on more than a weekly basis as reflected in department guidance and instruction. Required physical training will be completed during duty hours and on each available shift.
WORK ENVIRONMENT 
Employee is exposed to out-of-control fires, HAZMAT spills, or possible explosions. May suffer from burns, dehydration, and other effects of heat; smoke inhalation, heavy protective clothing, falling materials, or explosions. Subject to physical injury and sensory damage from firefighting activities, exposure to HAZMAT and high noise levels. Must deal with victims in emergency situations that may be in varying stages of fright, panic, injury, and shock. May be exposed to infectious disease. There may be hazards while operating or riding fire trucks at high speeds under adverse conditions. The employee works outside in all types of weather conditions.
