Here is What You Will Be Doing:
<ul>
<li>Triages patients to determine if medical exams are needed after a forensic exam. </li>
<li>Coordinates a team-based care strategy incorporating all agencies involved in assisting the victim and coordinate referrals for appropriate medical and psychological follow-up as needed for each patient. </li>
<li>Performs a complete physical and forensic evidence collection examination including Head-to-Toe assessment for trauma, detailed genital examination, forensic specimen collection and documentation, including photography, and assess for mandatory reporting status, reporting when appropriate. </li>
<li>Performs and documents sexual assault and forensic interview accurately and in accordance with the Forensic Nursing Program requirements. </li>
<li>Supports and participates in legal proceedings as needed. </li>
<li>Participates in quality assurance projects, community education, peer review and maintain medication test annually. </li>
<li>Debriefs as needed to maintain staff emotional and physical wellness. </li>
<li>Performs all forensic duties in compliance with Forensic Nursing Program protocols and regulations. </li>

Job Description 
A Forensic Nurse Examiner Apprentice is specially trained and certified by the Maryland Board of Nursing to provide comprehensive care to adults, adolescents and children who have been impacted by sexual assault, intimate partner violence, child abuse, human trafficking and non-intentional trauma. The Apprentice works under the general direction of the Forensic Nurse Examiner Manager.
Principal Duties: 
Duties will be completed with assistance from an experienced FNE and under the direction of the manager until certification is achieved as a Forensic Nurse Examiner by the Maryland Board of Nursing. After certification, duties will be performed independently.
1. Assists in performing forensic evidentiary examinations on victims and alleged perpetrators in connection with chronic or acute physical, sexual, or domestic assaults, and specifically:
&nbsp; &nbsp;a. Provides timely, non-judgmental, compassionate care to patients with a complaint of sexual assault utilizing a clinical process.
&nbsp; &nbsp;b. Obtains consent from the subject or custodial/proper authority prior to the examination relative to photography and evidence collection.
&nbsp; &nbsp;c. Performs evidentiary physical assessments using ALS when indicated based on evidence-based research and unit-based training.
&nbsp; &nbsp;d. Completes the Physical Evidence Kit required by law enforcement authorities.
&nbsp; &nbsp;e. Photographs patients and injuries as training indicates using proper technique.
&nbsp; &nbsp;f. Ensures compliance with Chain of Custody requirements.&nbsp;
2. Interfaces with law enforcement officials, crime labs, prosecutors, and other authorized stakeholders concerning forensic processes and outcomes to include providing expert testimony in judicial proceedings.
3. Provides testing, prophylactic treatment, prescription refills and related education to patients who potentially may have been exposed to HIV during their assault.
4. Participates in peer reviews, staff meetings and SART meetings.
5. Performs related work as assigned.
Qualifications

<li>Current Maryland license in good standing as a Registered Nurse.</li>
<li>Must attend and successfully complete MBON Certified 40-hour didactic FNE Course within first 60 days of start date. If class and class time is paid for by University of Maryland, the FNE will agree to stay for one year after he/she is fully certified as an FNE-A.</li>
<li>Apprentice RN will agree to provide 60 hours of on call time each month while in the apprentice program.</li>
<li>18 months RN experience in clinical setting required, 3 or more years preferred.</li>

Organization Overview:
Turning Point, Inc in Mount Clemens, MI is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization qualified employer for Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF). Turning Point, Inc empowers domestic and sexual violence survivors through comprehensive services and resources while advocating for community action to end oppression and violence. We offer emergency shelter, housing, trauma advocacy services, forensic nurse examiner program &amp; first response advocacy services, 24-hour hotline, personal protection order and legal advocacy services, and community outreach.

Position Overview: 
The Forensic Nurse Examiner (FNE) is part of a team of nurses that provides 24/7 emergency medical care and evidence collection for individuals who experience sexual assault and/or intimate partner strangulation. Under the supervision of the Director of Clinical Forensic Nursing Services, the FNE follows established protocols in providing medical forensic examinations, crisis intervention, testimonies, resources, and support to patients and their significant others. The FNE also assists the Director in the sustainability and advancement of Turning Point’s Forensic Nurse Examiner Program (FNEP) through the recruiting, training, and monitoring of staff members, as well as, building community partner relationships through education and awareness. Travel is required between FNEP sites. 
 
General Task Areas:
<ul>
<li>Implement agency and program mission and empowerment philosophy. </li>
<li>Maintain agency policy on confidentiality, record keeping and professional ethics. </li>
<li>Abides by agency policies, procedures, contracts, rules and regulations.</li>
<li>Maintains FNE program policies, procedures, protocols and on-call schedule.</li>
<li>Perform medical forensic examinations for patients who experience sexual assault and/or intimate partner strangulation, and suspects. </li>
<li>Coordinates case management and follow up appointments with patients.</li>
<li>Dispense prophylactic medications under the direction of a Program Medical Director(s) per policy. </li>

<li>Maintains program statistical data and provides reports.</li>

Qualifications:

Responsibilities
<ul>
<li>The Nurse works as part of a Forensic Assertive Community Team that provides care and treatment for clients that are experiencing significant mental health/psychiatric symptoms, who are demonstrating significant functional impairments, and who may have co-occurring chemical dependency and/or personality disorder.</li>
<li>The Nurse is viewed as a primary agent of hope and change and is required to work in full partnership with the client in his/her recovery process. The practitioner has a two focused level of responsibility: first, for the care, welfare, treatment, and safety of the clients as individuals; secondly, for the facilitation of a work and a treatment culture that promotes team work, professionalism, cultural competency, and adherence to best practice principles and interventions.</li>
<li>The Nurse has responsibility for client specific and program outcomes. Primary duties include health/medication assessment, crisis assessment and management, planning, individual counseling, skills teaching, psychiatric/medical case management, medication monitoring/administration, staff training, care coordination with outside providers, and on-call.</li>
<li>Forensic Assertive Community Team is an adaptation of the assertive community treatment model designed to serve people with a serious mental illness who are involved in the criminal justice system. It features a collaborative relationship between the mental health professionals and the criminal justice agencies. </li>
</ul>

 
Qualifications
<ul>
<li>Holds an associate arts degree in nursing and has at least 6,000 hours of supervised experience in the delivery of services to persons with mental illness; or bachelor's degree in nursing and has at least 2,000 hours of supervised experience in the delivery of services to persons with mental illness; or holds a graduate degree in nursing and has at least 2,000 post BA hours of supervised experience in the delivery of services to persons with mental illness. </li>
<li>This position requires a Registered Nurse license. All staff are supported in gaining certification as a Certified Psychiatric Rehabilitation Practitioner. The agency encourages staff to seek license at the highest standard permitted by his/her education and experience.</li>
<li>Upon hire, this position requires demonstration of the ability to conduct medical and functional assessments, develop treatment plans, provide crisis and behavioral management, provide goal directed individual counseling, facilitate groups, teach skills, provide medical/psychiatric case management, problem-solve, and communicate effectively, orally, and in writing. This position requires teamwork and the ability to work alone. </li>

<li>Your work will directly improve the quality of life for the Individuals you support. You will learn techniques to help them have positive interactions with others and reach their goals. You will assist Individuals with their personal needs (e.g., hygiene matters like baths/showers, changing clothes/adult briefs, teeth brushing, medication reminders, etc.) and with social needs (e.g., prepare meals, clean, and engage with them through exercise/movement, games and/or transporting them in your, or company, vehicle to community activities, etc.).</li>
<li>You will also keep accurate progress notes and proactively communicate information with your team about the Individuals’ needs – taking care of them like you would with your own family.</li>
</ul>
There will be chats, C.A.R.E., &amp; cheers: 
<ul>
<li>You will participate in all required training, team, and company meetings to build your knowledge, skills, and abilities to grow in the family. We like to promote from within our own house!</li>
<li>You will take ownership of your own behaviors, and help coach others over time, in how to effectively demonstrate the company’s C.A.R.E. values (compassion, adaptability, respect, and empowerment).</li>
<li>You will receive ongoing coaching and performance feedback and be recognized for your personal and team contributions in addition to demonstrating the C.A.R.E. values.</li>
