Job Description
Highlands County Fire Rescue (HCFR) was formed October 2, 2018, by resolution of the Highlands County Board of County Commissioners. The newly formed combination paid/volunteer department consolidated operations of the previous 10 independent volunteer fire companies, under the County system. Further, Highlands County EMS was consolidated into the new HCFR.
HCFR is an all-hazards response organization, responding to 911 calls for myriad issues including but not limited to: structure, brush, vehicle, and trash fires; motor vehicle wrecks; shootings, stabbings, and other injuries along with heart attacks, strokes, COVID, and many other illnesses. We also respond to hazardous materials incidents, technical rescue calls, cats in trees, individual life assists, investigations for odors and sounds, along with many other emergency and non-emergency calls for assistance.
Requirements:
1. Be at least 18 years of age.
2. Complete the application process.
3. You will be required to appear in person at either a local fire station or headquarters, at a time to be determined to receive ID, Uniforms and Firefighting Gear (No charge to you).
4. Completion of New Hire Orientation (No cost and no prior training required).
5. All applicants will be expected to regularly attend meetings and internal trainings.
6. While there is not a specific residency requirement, volunteers must be capable of responding to the station for calls. Volunteers generally live close to the station where they are assigned.
7. We pay $5.00 for every call you respond to, paid quarterly.

Physical Demands

General Definition of Work 
Our resident volunteer program offers rent-free living in our state-of-the-art Station in Ashburn, VA. Certified firefighters and EMTs are eligible for the program.
Resident Operational Volunteers typically cover three duty shifts per week from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m., in addition to other duties as assigned. In return, the department provides temporary living accommodationsat no cost.
 
Resident Operational Volunteers must:
<ul>
<li>be at least 18 years old</li>
<li>meet minimum training and certification standards</li>
<li>employed full time (at least 36 hours per week), or full-time college students (at least 12 credit hours per term), or employed part-time while attending school part-time (at least 18 hours of work and 6 credit hours per term)</li>
</ul>
 
Our newly built Station 6 includes a Live-In Suite, including bedrooms, a living room, and a private bathroom for our live-in members.
 
Essential Functions 
<ul>
<li>Responding to emergency calls; suppressing fires; rendering medical aid; preparing and maintaining detailed records.</li>
<li>Train as though your life and the lives of your friends and neighbors depend on your readiness. Volunteer Firefighters participate in drills and attend classes on fire suppression, disaster control, and related fields, maintain skill level through ongoing training to prevent degradation of skills;</li>
<li>Participates in community awareness and public education programs; maintains apparatus and equipment in ready condition; assists in the inspection and maintenance of equipment and apparatus </li>
</ul>
 
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities 
<ul>

Special Requirements 
This position will require that members wear and maintain appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) such as, but not limited to, steel-toed shoes, safety glasses, gloves, Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA), N95 respirator, or other designated safety attire and equipment in designated areas of risk.
