JOB SUMMARY:
Under general supervision, the Nurse Practitioner provides direct patient care and leadership and supervision to the nursing staff of the Health Services Department. Under the direction of the Director of Student Health Services, the Nurse Practitioner monitors nursing activity and communicates change as needed. Performs Mental Health Assessments and follow-up visits for medication management for the Counseling Services Department at the University.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

<li>The Nurse Practitioner will provide direct care to a patient, and provide supervision to staff nurses as needed. In the absence of other nurses, the Nurse Practitioner is required to assist with patient care.</li>
<li>Communicates and interprets policies and procedures to nursing staff, and monitors staff practices and implementation. </li>
<li>Participates in the recruitment and selection of nursing personnel and assures sufficient staff are hired</li>
<li>Must be able to work flexible hours as needed. Must be available on an "on-call" basis to take off-hours emergency calls. </li>
<li>Provide diagnosis and management of minor, acute, episodic illness, stable, chronic disease, health promotion, and health maintenance</li>
<li>Skillfully interview the patient to develop a medical and health history regarding the chief complaint; indicators of health; developmental history, and factors contributing to or undermining the academic success of students</li>
<li>Perform physical examinations to evaluate the chief complaint and differentiate between abnormal and normal physical findings</li>
<li>Order laboratory &amp; radiological diagnostic tests as appropriate, including point of care tests</li>
<li>Documentation of data via problem-oriented health history which includes chief complaint, history of present illness, patient profile, family history, past illnesses, review of pre-admissions Medical History &amp; Immunization Record and review of systems</li>
<li>Provide prescriptions for drugs, devices, and immunizing agents in accordance with the practice agreement and protocols. Provide non-prescription drugs and alternative therapies for symptom control</li>
<li>Provide psychosocial support measures to patients, significant other and parents.</li>
<li>Perform Mental Health Assessments and follow-up visits for medication management for students that are referred by the Counseling Services Department.</li>
<li>Teach patients to understand their illness, follow through with prescribed medical regimen and cope with changing life patterns as related to changing health status, developmental tasks and academic challenges</li>
<li>Assist patients to identify and utilize health resources to coordinate and assist patients in health maintenance, health promotion and disease prevention</li>
<li>Considered Essential Personnel whose physical presence is required on campus and must also be prepared to address those functions remotely (from off-campus) as needed when operations are restricted or the campus is closed.</li>
<li>Collaborate with other associate health disciplines to ensure continuity of client care</li>
<li>Provide screening and advisement over the phone or internet and document all tele-health consultations in the patient's medical record</li>
<li>Provide expeditious assessment of medical emergencies when called upon, initiate appropriate medical care, direct the nursing team, and refer out as deemed necessary</li>
<li>Maintain confidential medical records. Follow appropriate legal and medical records policy and procedures for storing, transfer, retrieval and maintenance of all medical records and medical information</li>
<li>Provide medical procedures such as immunizations, Tuberculosis Screening, phlebotomy, etc.</li>
<li>Ensure that medical practice is current and consistent with the best medical practices as defined in evidence based and outcomes based medical research, standards of medical practice revisions and protocol updates</li>
<li>Ensure that medical practice is current and relevant by attending CMS – continuing medical education programs, maintaining membership in appropriate professional organizations and networking regularly with other health professionals, specifically those who work in other college health programs</li>
<li>Participate in the development and implementation of health education and wellness programs</li>
<li>Stay current on best clinical practices, engage in continuing education credits, and keep record of medical protocols utilized in clinical practice.</li>
<li>Assist in coordinating with students to obtain necessary health documents to be complaint with New York State regulation.</li>
<li>Maintain high professional standards of ethics and integrity. </li>
<li>Maintain confidentiality of information (including but not limited to: student and employee personal information, student grades, etc.), both during and after their employment with the University. Any question regarding the confidentiality of material, should be referred to the supervisor. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

<li>Current knowledge of primary and urgent care, public health, community health issues and college health issues. </li>

<li>Performs tasks related to maintaining skin integrity to include proper repositioning and skin care. Ensures special patient supplies and appliances are provided and maintained such as TED hose and sequential compression devices.</li>
<li>Under the direction of RN and as determined by site/unit requirements, may be required to remove IVs, provide post mortem care, and bladder scans.</li>
<li>Practices within policies and procedures of infection prevention by demonstrating hand hygiene and knowledge of sterile and aseptic procedures, proper disposal of contaminated materials and utilizing proper attire when in direct contact with patients in isolation.</li>
<li>Must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served. Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the department's policies and procedures. Age-specific information is developed further in the departmental job standards.</li>

 Licensure, Registration, and/or Certification Required:
