Earth, Atmospheric, and Marine Sciences Librarian Academic Engagement and Learning Services
The University of California, San Diego Library seeks creative, collaborative, and service-oriented applicants for the position of Earth and Marine Sciences Librarian for our Academic Engagement and Learning Services (AELS) Program (Assistant, Associate or Full Librarian).
Responsibilities of the Position Reporting to the AELS Assistant Program Director for Research Advisory Services Services, the Earth and Marine Sciences Librarian investigates and identifies user needs and develops services and collections for faculty, staff and students of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO).
Subject Librarian Services (60%) • Deliver consistent communications, outreach and on-campus presence for academic programs including ocean biosciences, atmospheric and climate sciences, and geosciences at SIO. • Serve as a point of contact and information resource for SIO on resources, services, and policies. • Build relationships and gather information about assigned departments to discover curricular trends, research needs, and other information to guide service development and priorities. • Develop subject-related learning objectives to advance information and data literacy, and deliver instruction services in a variety of formats for undergraduate and graduate students at SIO. • Develop and maintain library collections, including primary and secondary sources, and tools, to support the teaching, learning, and research needs of students and faculty. • Work across the library to facilitate access and preservation of digitized collections, including SIO historic materials.
Subject Related Scholarly Communication and Data Services (30%) • Partner with Scholarly Communications Librarian and others to increase number of liaison-area faculty who deposit in the UC eScholarship open access repository and who publish using UC Transformative Agreements • Partner with the Scholarly Communications Librarian to provide instruction and research advisory services in the areas of publishing literacy, open science, and open access in assigned subject areas. • Partner with Data and GIS Services colleagues to provide support throughout the research data lifecycle, including finding, analyzing, visualizing, managing, and sharing data. • Working in collaboration with others in the library, support scholars throughout the research data lifecycle with a focus on making original contributions related to Earth, Atmospheric, and Marine Science disciplinary areas.
Undergraduate and General Services (10%) • Contribute to library public services, including lower-division instruction, reference, and/or outreach for general undergraduate programs in addition to assigned subject areas. • Participate in AELS meetings and contribute to program goals and initiatives. • Develop and implement strategies for advancing diversity, inclusion, equity, and accessibility in instruction, research assistance services and collections.

<h3>Job Description</h3>
Job Summary The Librarian reports directly to the Director of Library and Learning Resources. The Librarian assist the Library Director in the college library operations (i.e. managing resources and services). The Librarian performs duties in the areas of public services, circulation, acquisitions, research, student instruction, faculty support, online reference, and collection development. 
Essential Functions • Provides on demand reference and extended research services to students, faculty, and staff in person, by phone, and remotely using email and chat reference services; • Assists the Director and faculty to assess and evaluate the library instructional program and collection development in accordance to institutional goals; • Assists with creation of research guides, online tutorials and library instruction content; • Provides individual and classroom instruction for faculty, staff, and students in a face to face and virtual/online environment; • Collaborates with faculty to increase awareness of library resources to students; • Promotes library resources to faculty, students, and campus groups and prepare promotional material; • Ensures consistent access to electronic resources; • Assists the Director in performing website updates on a regular basis, including checking all links to the web page and updating as needed; • Assists the Director with managing library databases and online collections; • Collaborates with the Director and library team to establish library policies and procedures, and the development of budget proposals; • Assists the Director in the operation and administration of the integrated library system; • Performs technical services duties as needed; • Contributes to special projects as assigned; • Serves on library and college-wide committees; • Maintains records and statistical data on library functions and services as appropriate; • Fulfills incoming and outgoing interlibrary loan requests and keep usage statistics; • Reviews catalog records and new book acquisitions for accuracy of bibliographic data; • Processes new material of all types in order to preserve the material and aid in its retrieval; 2 • Maintains professional competencies appropriate to the position; • Maintains confidentiality of information exposed to in the course of business regarding students, supervisors or other employees; • Contributes to a safe educational and working environment by participating in all drills and training and being prepared to take action should a health or safety emergency occur; • Requires the kind of teamwork, supervision, and personal interaction, that cannot be had in a home office situation; therefore, regular and predictable on-site attendance is a job requirement; • Other duties, as assigned.

JOB PURPOSE: 
Plans, directs, monitors and evaluates the daily operation of all library functions and staff. Provides direction and operational management of the library, to include planning and organizing workflow, initiating and implementing operating policies and procedures, personnel, overseeing of library public information activities, evaluation of services, and record maintenance.

JOB DUTIES &amp; RESPONSIBILITIES:

<li>Builds library collections by selecting, recommending, ordering, receiving and shelving reference and circulation resources. Assures that collection includes adequate resources appropriate to the instructional programs of NTU.</li>
<li>Organizes collection by classifying, cataloguing, marking, and displaying resources; developing location guides; maintaining research and locator systems; re-shelving and refurbishing resources as needed.</li>
<li>Assists library patrons by clearly describing the library's resources, methods and systems; training patrons in library research methods; and guiding them in using these to meet their learning needs.</li>
<li>Locates and secures outside resources by clarifying requests, identifying and researching sources, securing inter-library loans, and training patrons in the use of these facilities and systems.</li>
<li>Issues and tracks resources using a documented check out and accountability system.</li>
<li>Responsible for development of and adherence to Collection Development policy and guidelines.</li>
<li>Monitors and ensures library computer systems operability.</li>
<li>Develops and implements systems to maintain records on employees, inventories, compliance activities, Library Division performance measures, required and benchmarked statistics, including collection usage statistics. </li>
<li>Provides library instruction to students, faculty and staff.</li>
<li>Performs other duties as assigned.</li>

SUPERVISION RESPONSIBILITIES:
<ul>
<li>Hosts regular staff meetings to ensure communication among personnel regarding departmental activities.</li>
<li>Supervises personnel which include hiring, firing, performance evaluation, training, work allocation, and problem resolution.</li>
<li>Oversees the daily operations of the library.</li>
<li>Preparing and maintaining compliance, work schedules, time keeping, and approval.</li>
</ul>
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:
<ul>
<li>Master's Degree in library science or library and information science.</li>
<li>New Mexico State Library Certification I.</li>
<li>Five year's work experience in a public, private, school, special, or research library.</li>
<li>Two year in a supervisory capacity.</li>
<li>Doctoral degree in Library Science preferred.</li>
<li>Higher education experience preferred.</li>
<li>Valid and clean state driver's license.</li>
<li>Must be able to pass background check, with NO prior convictions of any felonies and no history of child abuse and/or neglect.</li>

Purpose:
This position is responsible for performing professional support level librarian duties and exercising building and personnel supervision and support. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 
Under the direction of the Branch Manager:
