Summer Camp - JR. Counselors

Shift: Mid-day. Training starts May 1, 2024
JOB SUMMARY: 
The Camp Leader is responsible for all children participating in the YMCA program. They will implement and facilitate purposeful activities at the site for their designated group. They support the YMCA's promise to strengthen community by interacting with members in a positive and meaningful way. Members are defined as anyone with a current or potential relationship with the Y, such as children, parents, staff, volunteers, community, donors and guests.
EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

Must be 16 years of age or older. A high school diploma or equivalent is preferred. Experience working with children preferred. Upon hire, must complete Intro to the Ys Cause &amp; Culture, Y's Way to Service &amp; Engagement, and I Hear You: Service with CARE. Within 90 days of hire, Preventing Sexual Abuse Between Young Children, Principles of Youth Development, Youth Relationships: Creating Positive Interactions, and Youth Affirmations: Distinguishing Between Praise and Encouragement trainings required. Within 6 months of hire, Introduction to S.A.F.E., Foundations of Listen First, and Engaging with Families trainings required. CPR/AED, First Aid and Lifeguard certification preferred. Experience with working with children preferred.
SPECIAL SKILLS:
Must be able to supervise and instruct large groups of young children or teens. Knowledge of sports and children's programming preferred.
PHYSICAL AND/OR MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must be able to stand, remain outdoors and maintain continual physical endurance for extended periods of time. Must be able to lift and carry 50 pounds, watch, listen and facilitate group activities. The candidate must also be mentally alert and be able to process and follow directions.

CITY OF NOVI seeks Camp Lakeshore and Camp PowerPlay Junior Counselors (June-­August) for full-time positions charged with providing a quality experience for children ages 6-12. The position will work with a camp counselor to provide 8 to 10 campers a week a safe, growing, fun camp experience and work with other staff in a supportive manner. Always conduct yourself in a personable and "professional" manner as befits a member of our staff, and an employee of the City of Novi. Staff will greet campers and families upon arrival and orientate them to camp. Staff will support Camp Counselor to provide the following activities: Performing Arts, Nature Activities, Creative Crafts, Special Events, Instructional Sports, Field Trips, Sports and Games, Special Programs, Activities listed on your sites plan. Participate in all camp functions; attend all staff trainings and meetings. Keep accurate records and submit reports that are properly completed, in a timely fashion. Report any suspicion of child abuse to your supervisor and discuss it with no one else. Help where needed in any area of camp to contribute to the successful operation of camp. This position will report to the Head Counselor and the Recreation Supervisor.

Up to 37.5 hours/week. Starting rate $13 per hour. 
Minimum Qualifications: Must be at least 16 years old, have experience working with children, ability to work in the outdoors comfortably, must be enthusiastic and dependable, and CPR &amp; First Aid certification required (provided by the department.)
