Overview
The Histology Technician provides essential laboratory support within the Department of Pathology. This role is responsible for preparing and processing tissue specimens for microscopic examination, supporting accurate diagnosis and patient care. The position operates in a high-quality, compliance-driven laboratory setting that follows Joint Commission (TJC) and College of American Pathologists (CAP) standards.

Key Responsibilities:
- Perform a full range of histology laboratory procedures, including specimen preparation, embedding, microtomy, and staining.
- Operate and maintain laboratory equipment; perform calibrations, quality control, and preventive maintenance.
- Prepare reagents and staining solutions following established protocols.
- Accurately record, verify, and enter test results into the Laboratory Information System (LIS).
- Ensure proper labeling, organization, and disposal of biological materials and chemical waste.
- Adhere to safety, infection control, and regulatory compliance requirements.
- Collaborate with pathologists, technologists, and clinical staff to support diagnostic and patient care operations.
- Participate in quality assurance, process improvement, and continuing education initiatives.
Qualifications:
- Education: Completion of a Histology Technician training program accredited by NAACLS or ABHES, or an equivalent educational program meeting ASCP eligibility.
- Alternative Pathway: 60 semester hours (including 12 hours in biology and chemistry) or an associate degree meeting ASCP certification criteria.
- Certification: Current Histotechnician (HT) certification by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) required.
- Experience: Minimum of 1 year of recent histology experience in a clinical or hospital laboratory setting.
- Licensure: Not required.
- Technical Skills: Basic computer proficiency; familiarity with Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) preferred.
