Job DescriptionSalary:

A.I.S., Inc.(AIS)is a national scientific services firm supporting maritime activities requiring certification of compliance with environmental regulations as well as collecting data for use by Federal, State, Municipal, and other government agencies along the US coastline.

AIS is looking for a motivated Aquarium Technician to support the daily operations of the Woods Hole Science Aquarium, part of the Northeast Fisheries Science Center

Primary Function:

The technician will assist in animal care, habitat maintenance, life support system upkeep, and public engagement. This hands-on role contributes to the health and wellbeing of marine species housed at the aquarium and supports the Centers educational outreach mission. The position requires reliability, physical stamina, and the ability to work well both independently and in a team setting.


Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Prepare food and feed animals in the collection
  • Monitor food inventory and assist with restocking supplies
  • Observe and document animal behaviors such as aggression, breeding activity, and signs of stress or illness
  • Conduct routine cleaning and maintenance of habitats, life support systems, and animal care areas
  • Use biological laboratory equipment and follow standard sampling procedures
  • Assist in veterinary care and habitat improvements as directed
  • Greet visitors, assist with tours and educational events, and take reservations
  • Support development and maintenance of educational materials
  • Assist with light repairs and maintenance for exhibits and equipment
  • Operate government vehicles as needed to support aquarium functions
  • Participate in school group activities, VIP visits, and public outreach


Compensation: Candidates will be paid an hourly rate to be negotiated and total compensation will vary depending on candidates depth of experience. This is a fulltime position. AIS benefits package includes health and dental insurance, vacation, sick and holiday benefits.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Successful completion of at least 2 years of post-secondary study with 12+ semester hours in biology, chemistry, statistics, animal husbandry, botany, or related fields
  • Experience in laboratory or field settings involving biological methods and protocols
  • Knowledge of fish biology, aquarium husbandry, and life support systems
  • Ability to follow instructions, adhere to procedures, and maintain punctuality
  • Capable of physical labor including lifting, standing, stooping, and walking for extended periods
  • Ability to safely use hand tools (e.g., knives, screwdrivers, wrenches)
  • Strong teamwork and public interaction skills
  • Familiarity with computers and willingness to follow cybersecurity protocols
  • Ability to pass required training for operating a government vehicle
  • Comfort working in a cool, wet environment with uneven/slippery surfaces

Travel:

  • Reimbursed at an hourly rate along with compensation for miles accrued on a personal vehicle as well as per diem at the specified Government rate.
