Overview: 

This position is part of the Data as a Service Center of Excellence within the broader Enterprise Data and Analytics (eDNA) office, a function dedicated to enterprise-wide data and analytics at Securian. A leader in this position will manage across multiple teams dedicated to areas such as data, data domain/solution architecture, data domain/solution engineering, AI/ML engineering, and data operations. This leader should be able to build relationships with a diverse set of internal stakeholders and external vendors, while managing expectations and guiding team members towards continuous improvement of engineering and delivering data products to the different parts of the organization.

Responsibilities include but not limited to:

  • Own and manage two or more focus areas and provide leadership and direction to associates working in these domains.  For example, machine learning engineering, data API development, data operations, data catalog adoption, or data engineering for specific programs.  

  • Partners and works Enterprise Architecture and eDNA architecture teams and oversees the engineering, design, build, and maintenance of enterprise data assets adhering to architecture standards.

  • Owns and manages data domain/solution engineering teams and activities, including data profiling and ingestion, data pipelines for data transformations, and performance monitoring and fine tuning of data pipelines.

  • Support the creation of strategic data products in Cloud environments and exploration of new technologies and techniques.

  • Build and own the automation and monitoring frameworks that showcase reliable, accurate, easy-to-understand metrics and operational KPIs for data pipeline quality and performance.

  • Manages SLA / OLA and expectations for the data assets and processes in production

  • Recruits, motivates, and develops diverse team of data engineering professionals to sustain a high-performing, strategically focused workforce within the Data as a Service COE.

  • Accountable for the financial and human resources of the Data as a Service COE, including, but not limited to, budgeting and staffing of the function.

  • Partner with other technical teams as necessary to ensure data engineers have the tools and they need to efficiently deliver business outcomes.

    Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of work experience in data engineering, management functions in Financial Services or equivalent field.

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or equivalent.

  • Strong knowledge of data engineering and data management tools and capabilities.

  • Strong leadership skills, including the ability to create and maintain a positive culture and drive results through others.

  • Effective prioritization, including the ability to balance precision / accuracy and resources / timelines within the bigger picture.

  • Strong organization, attention to detail, and project management skills to ensure quality standards and deadlines are met

  • Collaborative, service, and consulting oriented style to add value and meet needs of business partners

  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, to explain processes and results to both technical and non- technical personnel

  • Strong work ethic and commitment to bringing projects and issues to closure

  • Demonstrated innovation, automation, and change leadership

  • Experience developing and leading high-performing, diverse teams.

  • Experience with cloud solutions, with AWS as a preferred cloud experience.

  • Demonstrated ability to execute on data engineering projects e.g. manipulating data (extraction, cleansing, joining, transforming etc.) from multiple sources, pipeline engineering and producing integrated and consumable data to end users and applications.

  • Demonstrated experience managing and operationalizing integrated and automated data engineering solutions.

    **This position will be in a hybrid working arrangement**

    Physical job requirements:

  • Ability to utilize keyboard, mouse and computer for up to 8 hours per day

  • Ability to work at least 40 hours per week
