Infrastructure Consulting Engineering (ICE) is seeking a Hydraulics Engineer to support the design of infrastructure projects throughout the Southeast. Based in Tysons Corner, VA (with hybrid flexibility), this role offers growth opportunities for entry-level engineers and leadership potential for seasoned professionals. You'll work closely with Project Engineers and multidisciplinary teams on Design-Bid-Build and Alternative Delivery projects, providing support in hydrologic and hydraulic modeling, erosion control, stormwater abatement, and green infrastructure for highway, bridge, municipal street, and pedestrian projects.Responsibilities
Responsibilities will scale with experience and may include:

  • Perform and/or assist in drainage design for highway and bridge construction projects.
  • Conduct field investigations and assessments to support design.
  • Develop and review hydrologic and hydraulic models, calculations, and design documents.
  • Prepare stormwater management plans, specifications, and permit submittals.
  • Coordinate with project teams to ensure designs meet DOT and regulatory standards.
  • Produce drainage designs using MicroStation – GEOPAK and/or Open Roads Designer (ORD).
  • Support or lead preliminary project cost estimates and quantity evaluations.
  • Participate in or lead meetings with clients, stakeholders, and agencies.
  • Mentor junior staff and review their technical work (senior-level).
  • Contribute to or lead NPDES permitting, scour analysis, FEMA/flood modeling, ditch/culvert/pond design, and erosion sediment control.
  • Support projects like VDOT Richmond District Bridge Bundles and the Western Area Infrastructure Improvement.

Qualifications
Required for all candidates:

  • Strong foundation in hydrology and hydraulics.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively across disciplines.
  • Excellent communication skills – both written and verbal.
  • Proficiency in modeling and design software to include MicroStation, GEOPAK, HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS, TR-20, FHWA Hydraulic Toolbox, HY8, etc.
  • Valid U.S. driver’s license and clean driving record.
  • Legally authorized to work in the U.S.
  • Must pass pre-employment screening; ICE is a drug-free workplace.

Entry-Level (EIT) Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or related field.
  • EIT certification is required or must be obtained within 6 months of hire.
  • 1–5 years of water resources experience working on highway/bridge drainage projects.
  • Familiarity with VA Department of Transportation (VDOT) design principles preferred.

Senior-Level (PE) Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or related field; a master’s degree is desired.
  • PE license required; VA License desired.
  • 5–10+ years of experience in drainage and stormwater design for infrastructure projects.
  • Advanced knowledge of VDOT standards.
  • Proven ability to mentor and review the work of junior engineers.

Physical and Environmental DemandsThis position predominantly involves up to 8 hours per day at a computer workstation, with occasional standing and walking. The employee may occasionally lift lightweight office supplies and materials, typically not exceeding 20 pounds. The office environment is indoors, characterized by controlled temperatures and minimal exposure to adverse conditions. Employees must have the ability to visually discern and differentiate details and colors of objects, and proficiency in recognizing sound, tone, and pitch. Clear and effective verbal and written communication skills are necessary. The role demands adaptability to interruptions and changes in workflow, as well as the capacity to sit for extended periods.When performing field work, the role involves moderate physical activity such as walking, standing, bending, and climbing stairs or ladders. Employees may occasionally lift objects weighing up to 30-50 pounds. It is essential for employees to navigate construction sites skillfully and conduct thorough site inspections. Employees must be capable of working in varied environmental conditions, including hot, cold, and noisy settings, and be able to stand and walk during site visits. Additionally, working on construction projects may involve night work and weekend work depending on the project scope and may include working in conditions with active traffic conditions or traversing wetlands and wooded areas.Expected Hours of WorkThis is a full-time onsite position, operating within regular office hours of 8:00 am - 5:00 pm, Monday to Friday. Flexibility for occasional night and weekend work based on project demands is expected. This position involves 10-20% field work with 80-90% design engineering. Travel will primarily be to job sites within the local area, with occasional trips to other ICE projects in the Southeast region.
