Embarcadero Media Foundation is seeking a creative, versatile visual journalist to join our award-winning staff. The visual journalist will be the primary photographer for our four Peninsula local news publications, and will also produce video and social media content.


This full-time position is responsible for ensuring the timely, creative and journalistically sound coverage of news from Mountain View through Redwood City, from breaking news to in-depth enterprise projects. The position supports the visual needs of the print, online and social media presence of the Redwood City Pulse, Palo Alto Weekly, Mountain View Voice and The Almanac. These publications and their websites are part of Embarcadero Media Foundation, a Palo Alto-based nonprofit news organization.


This is a full-time, non-exempt hourly position that comes with health insurance, paid vacation, a retirement savings plan and other benefits. The pay range is $24-27 depending on experience.


Our newsroom is unionized and is represented by Embarcadero Community News Guild, which is a unit of the Pacific Media Workers Guild.

Requirements:

  • Manage the planning, execution and production of all of our original visual content
  • Photograph a variety of breaking news, features, portraits and lifestyle/food assignments across our Peninsula publications, sometimes under tight deadlines and difficult situations
    • Adhere to the NPPA Code of Ethics for Visual Journalists
    • Capture and edit photos with integrity and the goal of keeping images as close to reality as possible
    • Embed photos with thorough captions following company style guidelines
  • Assist in identifying/prioritizing stories with good potential for visuals
  • Generate visual story ideas
  • Manage and organize Embarcadero Media photo archives, assist staff and public in locating photos when requested
  • Create Instagram/social media posts based on published articles, collaborating with the publication's editor for feedback on posts
  • Manage and update Photoshop and Premiere Pro templates for social media, including assisting reporters and editors interested in making their own posts

Qualified candidates should have:

  • Professional photojournalism experience with a degree in journalism or related field preferred
  • Experience and comfort covering breaking news, features, portraits and lifestyle/food assignments
  • Strong knowledge of Photoshop/Lightroom, Premiere and other photo and video editing software
  • Willingness to work evenings and weekends
  • Outstanding core photojournalism skills (reporting, photography and videography)
  • Strong commitment to photojournalism ethics
  • Strong writing skills, including ability to write clear, accurate photo captions; a working knowledge of AP Style
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ownership of appropriate camera gear
  • Ownership of reliable vehicle, along with insurance coverage and good driving record
