A Day in the Life
You clock in and open your work tablet. Overnight driver notes flag a brake vibration and an intermittent electrical fault. You roll a vehicle into the bay, run computerized diagnostics, and trace the issue from symptom to root cause. After a precise repair, you perform a test drive to confirm the fix before updating the job record and parts used in the system. Midday brings a scheduled preventive maintenance inspection; you adjust, test, and, when needed, rebuild engine components to spec. Later, a road call comes in—quick triage roadside, safe temporary repair, and a plan for full service back at the facility. Throughout the shift, you keep the workspace orderly and compliant with Federal, State/Provincial, and local requirements, and you never compromise on DOT safety standards.
What You’ll Do
- Diagnose and repair vehicle systems: steering, electrical, cooling, lubrication, braking, drivetrains, suspensions, clutches, transmissions, and oil/temperature/fuel regulation components.
- Adjust, test, and rebuild engines and related systems in line with relevant Federal, State/Provincial, and local guidelines.
- Test drive during preventive maintenance to verify driver-reported issues and after service to confirm successful repairs.
- Install, program, replace, and verify telematic devices across the fleet.
- Execute preventive maintenance and complete unscheduled repairs for vehicles serviced by this facility.
- Respond to road calls and perform on-the-road repairs as assigned.
- Document work—time, parts, repairs, and maintenance—on the work tablet and/or authorized forms.
- Maintain a safe, clean, productive work area in compliance with all applicable regulations and company housekeeping standards.
- Work within DOT requirements, the assigned shift, and overtime as needed.
Basic Qualifications
- 5 years of fleet experience with Diesel, Medium, and Heavy-Duty vehicles.
- At least five years of Auto/Truck or Bus mechanical repair experience.
- Experience operating under applicable local DOT rules for Medium/Heavy trucks.
- Computer proficiency with fleet management systems and documentation.
- Own and maintain the recommended minimum hand tools for a Medium/Heavy-Duty Diesel Technician.
- Advanced skill with computerized diagnostics.
- Sound judgment and strong decision-making abilities.
- Background in planning and scheduling maintenance (Daily, Weekly, Monthly).
- Willingness to work flexible schedules.
Preferred Qualifications
- Valid CDL, or ability to obtain within the first 90 days of employment.
- ASE certification in brakes, suspension, engine, electrical, A/C—or Master School Bus and/or Master Truck Technician.
Proficiencies
You should be proficient in: ASE Automobile and Light Truck Certification Tests
