Job Description

Everytown for Gun Safety Action Fund, the largest gun violence prevention advocacy group in the country, is seeking an experienced, talented, collaborative, strategic and creative lawyer to fill the role of full-time General Counsel. The General Counsel oversees corporate governance and risk management, compliance, tax, advocacy and political law and other nonprofit matters for Everytown for Gun Safety Action Fund, Everytown for Gun Safety Support Fund, and Everytown for Gun Safety Victory Fund, and affiliated entities (“Everytown”). Reporting to the President, with a dotted line to the COO, and managing a team of staff attorneys and paralegals, the General Counsel will:

  • Provide strategic legal guidance and oversight with respect to:

    • Rules and regulations for affiliated Section 501(c)(3), 501(c)(4) and 527 organizations

    • Federal, state and local lobbying, gift and campaign finance laws

    • Trademark, copyright and other IP laws

    • State laws regarding charitable governance and solicitation

  • Devise and implement nonprofit and organizational best practices and good governance

  • Oversee compliance with government rules and regulations

  • Draft, review, and negotiate complex transactional documents as well as contracts and agreements with coalition partners, consultants and vendors

  • Implement policies and procedures to ensure practical operations of all in-house legal matters

  • Manage outside counsel and liaise with other departmental areas within the organization on a variety of legal matters, including HR related matters.

  • Oversee the protection and development of the organization’s intellectual property

  • Work closely with the organization’s board of directors

Qualifications

  • JD from an accredited law school

  • Admitted/authorized to practice as in-house counsel in New York or Washington, D.C.

  • Minimum of 10-15+ years relevant legal experience, with significant in-house nonprofit, political/advocacy law and management experience strongly preferred

  • Experience working with senior executives and overseeing and partnering with inside and outside attorneys

  • Excellent drafting, negotiation and research skills

  • Strong risk management skills, including harmonizing the need to minimize risk while meeting frequently shifting organizational needs in a complex regulatory environment

  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills

  • Strong work ethic, sense of humor, flexibility, creativity, and a professional demeanor


The salary for this position is $240,000-$280,000 per year. Everytown offers a generous benefits package including medical, dental, and vision benefits; paid time off; a 401(k) match; education assistance; and more.
