Job Description

Job Description

The Power Applications Test Engineer is responsible for executing advanced power characterization, validation, and qualification testing to support Amphenol Commercial Group’s next-generation power interconnect products. This role operates within the Global Engineering Services Power Application Center and collaborates closely with product engineering, design teams, BU engineering, and customers. The engineer will design, conduct, and interpret complex power and thermal tests—including resistance, current carrying capability, thermal derating, efficiency, and reliability evaluations—to provide accurate and actionable data for New Product Development (NPD), Sustaining Engineering, and Product Qualification (PQ).

This position requires hands-on experience with high-current test systems, power analyzers, thermal measurement equipment, data acquisition systems, and detailed test reporting. The engineer will also support the development of new test methodologies, lab capability expansion, and standardization across Amphenol’s global power product portfolio.

Key Responsibilities

Power Applications Testing

  • Execute electrical, thermal, and mechanical test methods relevant to high-current interconnects, including:
    • Current-carrying capability (CCC)
    • Temperature rise / delta-T measurements
    • Power loss and efficiency analysis
    • Voltage drop and contact resistance evaluations
    • Thermal imaging, mapping, and hotspot identification
    • Short-term and long-term reliability testing
  • Conduct failure analysis and root-cause investigations on power products under evaluation.

Product Qualification Support

  • Perform Product Qualification (PQ) testing per customer, industry, and internal standards.
  • Prepare and execute qualification test plans and schedules.
  • Support pre-compliance evaluation for UL, IEC, and other regulatory/industry requirements.
  • Document all results through detailed engineering reports.

Test System Operation & Development

  • Operate high-current test racks, programmable power supplies, thermal chambers, DAQ systems, power analyzers, and instrumentation.
  • Develop custom fixtures, tooling, and thermal/electrical setups when required.
  • Assist in expanding the Power Application Center’s capabilities, including new test protocols, automation, and upgraded equipment.

Data Analysis & Reporting

  • Collect, analyze, and validate test data with high accuracy.
  • Prepare comprehensive test reports with conclusions, graphs, and data summaries.
  • Provide data-driven recommendations to product engineering, design teams, and customers.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Work closely with Business Unit engineering teams to support NPI/NPD.
  • Support customer meetings, design reviews, and technical discussions.
  • Collaborate with GES labs (Product Test Lab, Applications Lab, Metallurgy Lab, etc.) to ensure full qualification support.

Qualifications & Experience

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or related field.
  • 2–5+ years of experience in product testing, validation, or power electronics.
  • Strong hands-on background with power testing equipment (power supplies, electronic loads, DAQ systems, oscilloscopes, thermal measurement tools).
  • Experience with current-carrying capability tests, thermal rise measurements, or high-current interconnects.
  • Ability to interpret schematics, wiring diagrams, and thermal/electrical models.
  • Strong analytical, data-driven problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for report writing and cross-team collaboration.

Preferred

  • Experience with connector testing, power interconnects, or high-current components.
  • Familiarity with UL 1977, IEC 60512, IPC standards, or customer qualification standards.
  • Experience with thermal imaging systems (FLIR), laser thermometers, and environmental chambers.
  • Experience with automated test systems or LabVIEW/Python automation.
  • Prior experience in a testing laboratory environment.

Core Competencies

  • Hands-on technical aptitude and attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently and safely in a high-current environment
  • Strong ownership, accountability, and urgency
  • Data accuracy and disciplined documentation
  • Ability to manage multiple projects in parallel
  • Strong teamwork and communication in a cross-functional environment

Additional Information

This role is a critical part of GES’s strategy to support the rapid growth of high-current and power-dense solutions across Amphenol’s Commercial Group. The Power Applications Test Engineer will directly contribute to new technology evaluation, customer program success, and industry-leading test capability.
