Job Summary:
The Jail Mental Health Practitioner is employed by Grand Itasca Clinic & Hospital and provides comprehensive mental health care to incarcerated individuals within the Itasca County Jail setting. The Mental Health Practitioner provides comprehensive mental health assessment, stabilization, and follow-up care for individuals incarcerated in the county jail. This role ensures timely evaluation, intervention, and continuity of care for inmates experiencing mental health concerns. The practitioner works collaboratively with custody staff, nursing, medical providers, and clinic operations leadership to support safe, appropriate, and effective mental health care within a correctional environment.


Here's what you'll do when you join us:

  • Under supervision, provide behavioral health screening of detainees referred by facility staff or identified by prescreening through booking process or nursing services.
  • Under supervision, individual and/or group psychoeducation and skills-based interventions.
  • Assist custody and medical staff in the monitoring of behavioral health for referred detainees.
  • Coordinate with custody and medical staff in the management and treatment of detainees with behavioral health concerns
  • Monitor and assess therapeutic support of segregated and isolated detainees
  • Support and supplement the activities of county behavioral health services in the stabilization of at-risk detainees.
  • Coordinate with county behavioral health services for continuity of care and discharge planning/case management via sharing of pertinent patient information.
  • Complete documentation as well as maintain records for referral tracking and continuous quality improvement (CQI) under supervision.
  • Provide follow-up assessments for inmates placed on suicide precautions or close observation.
  • Complete timely mental health evaluations upon intake, referral, or change in condition.
  • Demonstrate commitment and dedication to providing behavioral health support and provide training to solve problems.
  • Deliver brief therapeutic interventions, supportive counseling, and safety planning as indicated.
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and comprehensive documentation in the electronic medical record.
  • Ensure adherence to Minnesota Department of Corrections (DOC) requirements, NCCHC standards, and contractual expectations.
  • Document clinical status, risk level, and response to interventions in accordance with policy and regulatory expectations.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.


If you have these qualifications, we'd love to chat:

  1. Master's degree in social work (MSW), Counseling, Psychology, or a related behavioral health field.
  2. Current Minnesota licensure as LICSW, LPCC, LMFT, or eligible Mental Health Practitioner under MN DHS guidelines required.
  3. Experience providing mental health assessments and crisis intervention required.
  4. Previous experience in correctional, emergency, or acute behavioral health settings preferred.
  5. Knowledge of Minnesota DOC, NCCHC standards, or other correctional healthcare guidelines preferred.
  6. Experience working with individuals with severe and persistent mental illness, substance use disorders, or co-occurring conditions preferred.
  7. Basic Life Support (BLS) or ability to attain certification within two months of employment and maintains certification.
