About the Role:
The Childcare Assistant Under 18 will play a vital role in supporting the daily operations of our childcare program at the YMCA. This position is designed to provide a safe, nurturing, and engaging environment for children, ensuring their well-being and development. The assistant will work closely with experienced childcare professionals to implement educational activities and supervise playtime, fostering social and emotional growth. By assisting in the planning and execution of age-appropriate programs, the candidate will contribute to the overall positive experience of the children in our care. Ultimately, this role is essential in helping to create a supportive community for families and children alike. The Childcare Assistant will work closely with children aged 5-12 years, ensuring their well-being and fostering positive relationships. Additionally, this role involves maintaining a clean and organized space, as well as communicating effectively with parents and guardians about their child's progress. Ultimately, the Childcare Assistant contributes to creating a positive and enriching experience for both children and their families.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Must be 14-17 years of age.
- Basic understanding of child development principles.
Responsibilities:
- Assist in supervising children during activities and playtime to ensure their safety and engagement.
- Help implement educational and recreational programs that promote learning and development.
- Support lead childcare staff in maintaining a clean and organized environment.
- Communicate effectively with children, parents, and staff to foster a positive atmosphere.
- Participate in training and development opportunities to enhance childcare skills and knowledge.
- May be asked to assist with preschool children or other Y youth programs as needed.
Skills:
The required skills for this role include effective communication, which is essential for interacting with children and their families. Organizational skills will be utilized to help maintain a structured environment and ensure activities run smoothly. Patience and empathy are crucial in understanding and responding to the needs of children. Preferred skills such as First Aid and CPR knowledge will enhance the safety measures in place, providing peace of mind to both staff and parents. Overall, these skills will contribute to a positive and enriching experience for the children in our care.
Additional Expectations
- Certification in CPR and First Aid within the first 90 days of employment (training provided by YMCA)
- Completion of a Child Development Associate (CDA) credential or equivalent before starting work (training provided by YMCA)
- Successful candidates must pass a background check.

Pay is based on YMCA childcare program experience and certifications held. Employees with a current lifeguarding permit are eligible for additional pay. Interviews for this position will take place in August. Training will take place on August 18th. The program runs August 19th-May 15th with opportunities to extend employment into our summer camp program in 2026.
Monday-Friday 3:00 PM-5:30 PM with additional shifts available on school's out and half days.
