  • This individual is accountable to the OR Nurse Manager/Director of Nursing.
  • Report to duty on time.
  • Don proper OR attire.
  • Wash hands with antimicrobial of choice
  • Completes am and pre-procedure surgical scrub per policy
  • Communicates problems with the patients and visitors, workflow, failure to understand directions or procedures, conflicts and other concerns encountered in the work day to the OR Nurse Manager/Director of Nursing.
  • Request for vacation or time away from work for personal illnesses, doctor’s appointments, or family emergencies are handled through the OR Nurse Manager/Director of Nursing.
  • Identifies patient care requirements by establishing personal rapport with potential and actual patients and other persons in a position to understand care requirements.
  • Establishes a compassionate environment by providing emotional, psychological and spiritual support to patients, friends, and families.
  • Works with sterile processing in the care and handling of sterile supplies, equipment and instrumentation when assistance is needed.
  • Assures quality of care by adhering to the therapeutic standards; measuring health outcomes against patient care goals and standards; making or recommending necessary adjustments; following organization philosophies and other governing agency regulations.
  • Wipe room furniture and equipment with antimicrobial before opening for the first case and after each case.
  • Assemble the necessary instruments, supplies and equipment for the surgical procedure according to the surgeon’s request and the surgeon’s preference card.
  • Open sterile supplies
  • Assist with checking and maintaining the room equipment is in working order.
  • Assist in moving the patient to the OR table and securing safety belt(s) as required
  • Keep noise level and distractions to a minimum.
  • Assist the anesthesiologist/anesthetist as needed.
  • Complete count with circulating nurse, if applicable
  • Perform skin prep, as appropriate for procedure.
  • Assist in gowning and gloving the surgical team.
  • Check medication name, dosage and expiration date with circulating nurse.
  • Label all medications and solutions on the sterile field.
  • Follows the principles of aseptic technique throughout the intraoperative period.
  • Informs the circulating nurse of any additional equipment needs throughout the case
  • Assists the surgeon throughout the case completing task appropriate for scope of practice.
  • Assesses and anticipates supply needs. Inventories and orders supplies as needed.
  • Cleans, dusts, mops and restocks rooms.
  • Complete intraoperative counts per facility policies and procedures.
  • Assist in draping of the sterile field using strict aseptic technique.
  • Apply dressings, connect drains and cleans patient.
  • Transfers patient to stretcher.
  • Wash hands between cases and more often as needed.
  • Set up for subsequent surgeries and perform OR terminal cleaning and restock supplies at the end of each day.
  • During down time complete other duties as assigned.
  • Restock ORs.
  • Appropriate cleaning of room and equipment.
  • Resolves patient problems and needs by utilizing multidisciplinary team strategies.
  • Maintains safe and clean working environment.
  • Complies with all policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Protects patients and employees by adhering to infection-control policies and protocols.
  • Reports off to the Nurse Manager or Supervisor at the end of each day.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality and protects operations by keeping information confidential and only accessing information on a need-to-know basis to maintain patient continuity care.
  • Ensures operation of equipment by following manufacturer’s instructions; troubleshooting malfunctions; notifying supervisor of needed repairs.
  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies and maintain adequate CEU’s for re-certification (if needed).
  • Maintains a cooperative relationship among health care team members by communicating information; responding to requests; building rapport; participating in team problem solving methods.
  • Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related tasks as needed.
  • Understands and performs accurately responsibilities and duties assigned during Fire, Disaster, and Bomb drills and/or actual events.
  • Abides by all regulatory agency guidelines including but not limited to OSHA, AHCA HIPAA, state and federal guidelines and laws delineating health care in the ASC environment, and reports issues of non-compliance matters to the Director of Nursing.
