The Sports Complex Manager leads, coordinates, and participates in the work of crews responsible for maintaining playing surfaces at Hobart Detter, Fun Valley and other city-wide athletic facilities. The work involves exercising functional and technical supervision over seasonal and assigned full-time maintenance staff, operation, and preventative maintenance work on a variety of specialized turf maintenance equipment and turf care systems. Provides input, recommendations and coordinates activities and game preparation with various user groups.
A Day in the Life:
- Responsible for a comprehensive program for maintaining warm and cool season turf grasses and all related systems.
- Plan, direct, and participate in the maintenance program for natural turf fields, irrigation systems, pest management programs and special projects related to the construction, renovation, and repair of fields and turf areas.
- Playing field preparation to include edging, top dressing, grooming infield, chalking/painting lines, temporary fencing/mound installation and facility janitorial duties.
- Train personnel in correct and safe operating procedures; disseminate and interpret instructions provided to employees using appropriate forms of communication.
- Inspects turf areas to determine irrigation requirements for various growing conditions, develops an appropriate watering plan, and accurately operates, programs, or adjusts controllers for automated systems or hand waters as required.
- Installs, troubleshoots and repairs broken water lines, valves, heads for irrigation system and performs related work to maintain efficient operation of the field watering system.
- Oversees the application of herbicides, pesticides, and fertilizers; ensures compliance with established safety procedures. Operates equipment to apply these chemicals and fertilizers to grass for the control of weeds, pests, and grass diseases.
- Plans, oversees, and participates in major athletic grounds and fields renovation projects, as assigned; schedules facilities, oversees, and quality controls reconstruction activities.
- Requisitions, purchases, maintains, and manages inventory of athletic field maintenance equipment, parts and supplies.
- Performs minor to semi-skilled maintenance tasks on motorized equipment such as cleaning, greasing, oil/filter change, hydraulic repairs, fuel system maintenance, sharpening blades, and making tire repairs.
- Responds to public inquiries in a courteous manner; provides information within the area of assignment.
- Demonstrates continuous effort to improve Athletic Complex operations, works cooperatively and jointly to provide quality customer service.
- Participates in the inspection and ensures the safety of baseball fields and related facilities.
- Provides snow and ice removal during inclement weather to baseball/softball facilities.
- Prepare baseball/softball facilities for special events and tournament accommodations.
- Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
What You'll Need for Success:
- EDUCATION: A high school diploma or GED is preferred.
- EXPERIENCE: A minimum of 4 years of experience in turf management, construction and/or maintenance related experience is required. At least 2 years of crew leader or supervisory experience is required. Experience using/operating commercial mowers, backhoes, skid loaders, spraying equipment, tractors, trucks, and/or other related equipment is required.
- LICENSE: A valid Kansas driver's license is required. Employee must be able to acquire a Kansas Commercial Pesticide Applicators License within six months of employment. Certifications in irrigation, landscaping, or horticulture operations are desirable.
