Basic Eligibility For A Position With The NRO

Where You Will Work 

If you have exceptional writing abilities and can take a draft product and turn it into a clearly articulated and polished product, the National Reconnaissance Office, office of Inspector General (NRO/OIG) needs you as part of their winning team. The OIG mission is to promote economy and efficiency and to detect and deter fraud, waste, and abuse in the NRO programs and operations. The NRO OIG is led by a Presidential Appointed and Senate-Confirmed Inspector General and is comprised of over 80 officers.

The OIG has five divisions whose mission is to conduct and support the execution of independent audits, inspections, and investigations. The selected candidate will join the Management Services Division which provides overall support to the entire OIG staff to include administrative support, budget, professional development, logistics and facility space management, action tracking, editorial review, and policy development.

What You Will Be Doing 

The OIG is seeking a candidate with strong writing and editing skills to enhance the quality and clarity of our products. By working in the OIG, the selectee will gain a broader understanding of the NRO organization and its mission. This is a great opportunity for an officer to help transform the current business processes and provide innovative business support solutions. Specific to this position, the selected candidate will:

  • Collaborate with multiple support and mission entities on the production and publication on various written products to ensure editorial quality, style, consistency, format, and compliance with government requirements.
  • Assist writers in the production of OIG products by providing guidance on grammar and punctuation, checking for compliance with established style guidelines, and assisting in improving clarity of the product as necessary.
  • Engage with team leads and other team members from the creation of outlines through issuing the final report and work with the audit, inspection, or investigation members to ensure accuracy and clarity of information presented in OIG reports.
  • Guide a diverse range of OIG activities while ensuring compliance with established goals and objectives.

What You Need 

  • Education: Bachelor's Degree from an accredited university or experience in a related field.
  • Ability to work in a diverse government.

Highly Desired 

  • Experience in improving administrative editing processes and facilitating change.
  • Knowledge of NRO automated tools and business systems to include SharePoint.
  • Familiarity with OIG products.

Qualifying experience may have been acquired in any public or private sector job, but will clearly demonstrate past experience in the application of the particular competencies/knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to successfully perform and is typically in or directly related to the duties of the position as described above. Experience must be reflected in your resume.

  • Overtime Statement: MAY be required to work other than normal duty hours, which may include evenings, weekends, and/or holidays.
  • Travel Statement: MAY be required to travel in military or commercial aircraft to perform temporary duty assignments.

2024 salary range for the Washington, DC area:

GG-14: $139,395 – $181,216. 

GG-15: $163,964 – $191,900. 

**This position is a senior level DCIPS position. The NRO is accepting applications from U.S. Citizens and current federal government employees for this position. To qualify for the position, federal government employees MUST currently be at the GG – 14/15 grade level and may ONLY apply for a lateral reassignment at their current grade level and step. Federal applicants who exceed the advertised grade may voluntarily request acceptance at the lower grade per IAW DoD 1400.25 Volume 2006.

Hiring Incentives

The NRO may offer hiring incentives and other entitlements at management’s discretion.

Trial Period

All new DCIPS employees will be required to serve a 2-year trial period.
