Summary:
The Medical Services Coordinator oversees and provides medical support within a homeless shelter environment, ensuring the health and safety of residents. This role involves conducting health assessments, managing medical emergencies, and coordinating access to medical resources and services. The ideal candidate must hold paramedic certification in the state of Louisiana and possess a strong commitment to serving vulnerable populations. Experience working with homeless populations or in community healthcare settings is preferred.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conduct initial health assessments for shelter residents to identify medical needs and recommend appropriate care plans.
  • Provide immediate first aid and emergency medical care to residents and staff as needed.
  • Administer medications and treatments within the scope of practice for a certified paramedic.
  • Respond to medical emergencies promptly, providing critical care until advanced medical personnel arrive, if necessary.
  • Collaborate with shelter staff, case managers, and external healthcare providers to ensure residents have access to ongoing medical care and necessary resources.
  • Educate residents on health-related topics, including hygiene, disease prevention, and managing chronic conditions.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential medical records for residents, documenting assessments, treatments, and referrals.
  • Enforce infection control protocols and ensure the shelter adheres to health and safety regulations.
  • Monitor the physical and mental well-being of residents and provide referrals for mental health support when appropriate.
  • Serve as a resource for shelter staff by providing guidance on medical concerns and emergency response procedures.
  • Participate in staff meetings to discuss resident care, shelter operations, and opportunities for program improvement.
  • Maintain medical supplies and equipment, ensuring they are stocked, organized, and operational.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Current paramedic certification in the state of Louisiana is required. High school diploma or equivalent; additional training in public health, community health, or a related field is a plus. Minimum of two years of experience as a paramedic; experience in community healthcare or with homeless populations is preferred.

  • Strong knowledge of emergency medical procedures, first aid, and infection control practices.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to interact empathetically and professionally with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to handle high-stress situations calmly and effectively, using sound judgment and decision-making skills.
  • Proficiency in maintaining accurate medical records and using basic computer systems.
  • Familiarity with trauma-informed care principles and health resources available in the New Orleans area is preferred.
  • Ability to work flexible shifts, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, as required.
  • Bilingual proficiency (English/Spanish) is a plus.
  • Experience providing care in a shelter, social service, or community healthcare setting.
  • Training in mental health first aid or crisis intervention techniques.
