JOB SUMMARYThe Diesel Mechanic will have a thorough knowledge of commonly accepted electric utility and equipment industry-standard work practices on a variety of gasoline and diesel-powered automobiles, battery-powered and hybrid electric vehicles, trucks, aerial man-lifts, construction equipment, powered and non-powered tools, and generating equipment to ensure the efficient, safe and reliable operation of EPB fleet. The Auto Mechanic is familiar with all aspects of EPB vehicle operation and understands the functions of the major components and systems.DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESDiagnose and repair of mechanical, electrical, computer, hydraulic and braking systems found on vehicles and mobile equipmentFabricate components utilizing saws, iron work, etcWeld components and machinery utilizing MIG, TIG, Arc and acetylene processesDiagnose and repair vehicles and equipment at remote locationsComply with company and departmental safety rulesMaintain tools and equipment in proper conditionKeep equipment available for use by completing preventive maintenance schedules; installing component and part upgrades; controlling corrosion; completing winterization proceduresCorrect vehicle deficiencies by removing, repairing, adjusting, overhauling, assembling, disassembling, and replacing major assemblies, sub-assemblies, components, parts, or systems, such as, power and drive trains, electrical, air conditioning, fuel, emission, brake, steering, hydraulics; completes machine shop operations; making adjustments and alignments including bearing loads, gear tooth contact, valve mechanisms, governors, oil systems, control linkages, clutches, and traction unitsVerify vehicle performance by conducting test drives; adjusting controls and systemsComply with federal and state vehicle requirements by testing engine, safety, and combustion control standardsMaintain vehicle appearance by cleaning, washing, and paintingMaintain vehicle records by annotating services and repairsKeep shop equipment operating by following operating instructions; troubleshooting breakdowns; maintaining supplies; performing preventive maintenance; calling for repairsContain costs by using warranty; evaluating service and parts optionsKeep supplies ready by inventorying stock; placing orders; verifying receiptUpdate job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading technical and regulation publicationsAny other duties as assigned by supervisorEDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCEA minimum of a one-year certificate in automotive or maintenance from a college or technical school and relevant experience; or 5 years related experience or training; or equivalent combination of education and experienceGood analytical skills to diagnose problems and decide the most suitable repairsCompetent at using servicing and maintenance tools and equipment and familiar with the different categories of lubricants and service partsGood interpersonal skills in discussing vehicle problems and solutions with car owners or service managersSKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS:Possess and maintain a current, valid Class A commercial driver's license with tanker and HAZMAT endorsements and authorization to drive all company vehicles or ability to obtain within 90 days of employment. Must be insurable under the company's insurance policyAbility to drive a vehicle with a manual transmissionFurnish proper tools to perform duties. A tool list will be set forth by Department LeadershipMeet acceptable standards in cleanliness and appearance. Cleanliness and safety of the work area are of high importanceMay perform other duties as assigned. This EPB job is essential to support this critical infrastructure and may be required to work onsite or in the field to maintain these services.
