AGENCY OVERVIEW

Since our founding in 1895 in Marin County as an orphanage - and through subsequent years as Sunny Hills Services - Side by Side has been at the forefront of best practices in child welfare, working with the most vulnerable youth in our community. Today, Side by Side operates in four counties - Marin, Alameda, Sonoma, and Napa - across the Bay Area, reaching nearly 2,500 children, young adults, and family members per year with much-needed services related to behavioral and mental health, early intervention in schools, LGBTQIA+ support, transitional housing for foster youth, and special education.

REAL ALTERNITIVES for YOUTH is a housing program that serves young Adults aged 18-26. Our apartment units are scattered across Hayward, Castro Valley and San Leandro, CA. Our aim is to assist young adults with housing and the skills to live independently in a safe, clean and functional environment.

COMPENSATION

This position is 40 hours a week with an hourly rate of pay between $24.00 and $30.00 depending on experience.

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Maintenance Worker's general duties consist of the setting up and maintaining of the apartments for our housing program with attention to detail towards cleanliness, and functional condition, and communication with all stakeholders.

DUTIES/RESPONSABILITIES/EXPECTATIONS

  • Routine repairs consisting of repairs to furniture, doors, locks, windows, screens, tiles, interior/ exterior walls and trim; repairs to plumbing fixtures, water leaks, valves, clogged toilets/drains, and garbage disposals; repairs to light fixtures, switches, receptacles, and some appliance repair such as vacuums, washers, dryers, dishwashers, etc.
  • Routine trash management that could include dump runs from move outs or trash overflow. Cleaning up around Trash areas and resorting and breaking down boxes.
  • Change locks, make keys, and maintain the organization and storage of keys to apartments.
  • Move furniture, personal belongings, packing and moving boxes.
  • Pick-up and delivery of donations as requested.
  • Complete a partial or full turnover of an apartment in a timely manner.
  • Communicate with team maintenance/safety issues you see in and around the units and SBS housing properties.

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must have demonstrated skills and knowledge in the areas of building and apartment maintenance and repair the use of necessary tools and equipment.
  • Must be stable, mature, service-oriented, and able to relate well with staff and young adults.
  • Must be able to read and speak English.
  • Must be able to communicate with iPhone technology (Texting, Facetime, Camera).
  • Must be flexible in accomplishing tasks as required and have the ability to work unsupervised.
  • Must be organized and able to respond quickly in emergency situations.
  • Must have experience in safe work practices, including PPE and the understanding of material safety data sheets. (SDS)
  • Must possess a valid California Driver's License and be insurable on agency insurance.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts, in high places and outside in all weather conditions. Inside unoccupied and occupied apartments.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

  • Must be able to use all mechanical maintenance equipment and supplies safely.
  • Standing for extended periods of time.
  • Walking, sitting, twisting and bending for brief periods of time.
  • Occasional reaching and/or grasping using hands and/or arms.
  • Will be required to ascend/descend stairs or ladders.
  • Visual ability to read documents, cell phone and computer monitor.
  • Exposure to sharp tools, characteristic of a construction environment.
  • Ability to drive safely.

  • Adhere to all Health and Safety policies and procedures administratively as well as related to the care of our clients.
  • Administer duties as defined by the agency performance review plan within the required deadlines.
  • Attend required meetings and complete training courses as assigned.
  • Follow agency policies and procedures.
  • Must maintain strict confidentiality related to client and staff and other agency information.
